Frontispiece black and white photo plus 51 other black and white captioned photos and maps. Chronology with Sources, Bibliography, and Index. Green cloth with gilt letters in a black field on the spine. Just minor wear to extremities, top of spine just starting to fray, gilt slightly dulled, previous owner's address label on front free endpaper (Mrs. Harry D. Krummell, Whittier, CA), all illustrations in fine condition, cloth clean and bright, else very good to fine with no internal markings. Born in Fall River, WI in 1894, Carl Parcher Russell was an historian, ecologist, and administrator. He joined the National Park Service in 1923 as a Naturalist in Yosemite National Park and became Chief Naturalist, United States National Park Service. He earned a Ph.D. in Ecology from the University of Michigan (1931). He was the Chief Naturalist of Yosemite from 1923 to 1929. This book is a classic on Yosemite. "This book is more than a history of Yosemite. It traces the evolution of an idea." [from the Foreword].
