Er lebte auf einer Farm in Connecticut. Leben: Roth stammt aus einer jüdischen Familie. Seine Großeltern, die aus Osteuropa emigrierten, sprachen Jiddisch. Roth selbst besuchte die jüdische Weequahic High School und studierte 1950-51 an der Rutgers University. 1954 erwarb er an der Bucknell University in Lewisburg/Pennsylvania den Bachelor of Arts in Englisch, graduierte ein Jahr darauf in Chicago zum Master of Arts und erhielt die Lehrerlaubnis. 1955-56 diente er in der Armee, anschließend war er von 1956-58 Dozent für Englische Literatur an der University von Chicago. 1959/60 war er Guggenheim-Stipendiat, danach lehrte er bis 1962 an der University of Iowa Creative Writing. Als Writer-in-residence" verbrachte er die Jahre 1962 bis 1980 erst in Princeton, dann an der University of Pennsylvania. Ab 1989 nahm Roth eine Dozententätigkeit für Creative Writing am Hunter College in New York wahr. Roths Ehe mit Margaret Martinson hielt von 195963; 1968 starb Martinson bei einem Autounfall.
