4to. 24-pages, approximately 6000 words. The chatty and descriptive letters describe at length the people he met along the way, social activities, historical and religious sites he visited, various Churches and Cathedrals, etc. After graduating from Wesleyan in 1865, Sanford began his career as a Methodist minister before joining the Congregational Church in 1868, this visit to Europe interrupting a four year stay in Cornwall, Connecticut. Following ten-year tenures at churches in Thomaston and Westbrook, Connecticut, he began work with national organizations, helping found the Federal Council of Churches in 1908, while publishing a history of Connecticut (1887) and of the Reformation 1917). Cf. DAB for a short biography. The letters are accompanied by a single small envelope, with Sanford's name printed in an upper corner, labeled in manuscript "Letters written to âMartha' / From Europe, 1868." Old fold lines, some separations along folds, but entirely legible and an inviting view into the reflections of a young Congregational minister who later in life would help found organizations dedicated to "the essential oneness of the Christian Churches of America."
