Second Edition, Small Folio, 13.5 x 9.5 inches, chromolithographed title in red & black. & 111 chromolithographed plates, many heightened in silver & gold. numerous illustrations in the 157 pages of text which is interspersed with the plates. Original cloth gilt, re-backed preserving the original spine and boards with gilt titling and rules to spine, all edges gilt. This copy has at some time suffered slight water damage to the lower margin of the frontispiece and title page and first and last few plates, although the images are largely unaffected and the body of the book is completely unaffected. Jones brought together designs from all over the world to form one of the major influential pattern books of the Victorian age. The work was first published in 1856 in an expensive, lavish large Folio edition, this reprint was an attempted to make the work available to a larger public without compromising the quality of the plates which were faithfully redrawn and reissued in a smaller size. The change in size to a smaller format necessitated several illustrations to be set out on two plates instead of one in the original which explains why this edition has 112 plates compared with the 100 of the first edition.

"To us today, inundated with photographic references for almost every work of art or kind of decoration in the world, The Grammar of Ornament is still a superb picture-book: but in the 1850s it was the first time in England that anything like so many illustrations or ornament had ever been assembled in colour in on work, and certainly the first time in England that any systematic and serious reproductions in colour of historical ornament had ever been printed, apart from Owen Jones's Alhambra, and works by Digby Wyatt and Noel HumphreysÉOwen Jones's book was by far the most ambitious in scope yet attemptedÉ" (McLean, Victorian Book Design and Colour Printing, pp. 122-4). Folio. [2], 157 pp. Chromolithographic title and 111 chromolithographic plates. Burgundy cloth, with front cover and spine stamped in gilt, expertly recased. Top edges lightly bumped. A very good, bright copy. First published in 1856, this is one of the great monuments in Victorian color printing. Quaritch published subsequent editions in 1868, 1910, and 1928.

Third Edition. A splendid example of Victorian colour printing and a classic work in its field, which has served as a primary source for designers and decorators since its first publication in 1856. Among those who contributed to the volume were J.B.Waring, J.O.Westwood, C.Dresser and M.Digby Wyatt. Included are examples and discussion of the ornament of American Indian tribes, Egyptian ornament, Assyrian and Persian, Greek, Pompeian, Roman, Byzantine, Arabian, Turkish, Persian, Indian, Hindoo, Chinese, Celtic, Mediaeval, Renaissance, Elizabethan, and Italian ornament, Moresque ornament from the Alhambra, and leaves and flowers from nature. Owen Jones was one of the leading English architects and ornamental designers of his day. "Jones s forte was interior decoration. He insisted strongly on the decorative importance of colour, declaring that form without colour is like a body without a soul . He had much fertility of invention, and by his example and by the publication of his Grammar of Ornament and other writings exercised a considerable influence on the designs of English wall-paper, carpets, and furniture." Zweite Ausgabe; gegenüber der ersten Ausgabe von 1856 etwas verkleinert und um 12 Tafeln vermehrt. - "All, therefore, that I have proposed to myself in forming the collection which I have ventured to call the Grammar of Ornament, has been to select a few of the most prominent types in certain styles closely connected with each other, and in which certain general laws appeared to reign independently of the individual peculiarities of each" (O. Jones). - "A complete and unabridged full-color edition of the classic sourcebook on ornamental design. First published in 1856, The Grammar of Ornament remains a design classic. Its inspiration came from pioneering British architect and designer Owen Jones (1809 1874), who produced a comprehensive design treatise for the machine age, lavishly illustrated in vivid chromolithographic color. Jones made detailed observations of decorative arts on his travels in Europe, the Middle East, and in his native London, where he studied objects on display at the Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of All Nations in 1851 and at local museums. His aim was to improve the quality of Western design by changing the habits of Victorian designers, who indiscriminately mixed elements from a wide variety of sources. Jones's resulting study is a comprehensive analysis of styles of ornamental design, presenting key examples ranging from Maori tattoos, Egyptian columns, and Greek borders to Byzantine mosaic, Indian embroidery, and Elizabethan carvings. At once splendidly Victorian and insistently modern, The Grammar of Ornament celebrates objects of beauty from across time periods and continents, and remains an indispensable sourcebook today" (Princeton University Press zur Neuausgabe 2016). - "Like the Crystal Palace, for which Jones himself designed the interior color scheme, this book is a riotous cornicopia of hue and form, a heroic attempt to come to grips with the entire world of things. The Grammar of Ornament is an object of beauty in its own right" (Tim Barringer, author of Reading the Pre-Raphaelites). - Einband etwas berieben, Kapital geringf. beschädigt, Textteil papierbedingt etwas gebräunt, gutes Exemplar. No Binding. Condition: Very Good. FIRST EDITION Large Folio Chromolithographed calligraphic title page + letterpress title and 100 chromolithographed plates, many heightened in silver & gold, numerous illustrations in the [112] pp. text. This example seems to be the original parts issue of the text and plates, and has never been bound with the text only having been sewn and consolidated with a cloth back-strip, with text block and plates loose in a contemporary marbled paper and cloth portfolio. The text block is slightly foxed on the title page, otherwise clean and sound. The plates are also clean and crisp, one has an old tear repaired and 8 have at some time been folded but these faults are really only visible on the verso. Jones's masterpiece, a monumental example of colour printing, produced as a result of the impact of the Great Exhibition, was a prophetic work which was to mark a major change in aesthetic considerations and to herald the move towards non-representational art. The first great compendium of historical styles in an entirely original format where a global range of ornament was juxtaposed in coloured plates on a grand scale. A vital document in philosophies of design in the Victorian period which had an enormous impact on art and industrial design in England and the wider world.

Bedford and printed in colors by Day and Son. With additional wood-engraved illustrations in text. Jones (1809 - 1874) brought to his career as an artist his experiences as an architect, which influenced the subject of his DETAILS AND ORNAMENTS FROM THE ALHAMBRA, and this, "the culminating work of Jones's career . Jones's remarkable synthesis is not only a notable illustrated book, but a great book tout court" - Ray. It enjoyed successive editions, the monumental production expenses being justified by the book having been adopted as a required text for use in the British schools of design. In addition to the illustrative element, Jones included in the text his rationale for ornamental art, and thirty-seven propositions concerning the arrangement of color in architecture and decorative arts.
