Book
Hardcover. Condition: NF. Dust Jacket Condition: VG+. Photos, Art, (illustrator). 1st. James (Ginger) Lacey was one of few RAF fighter pilots who served throughout WWII. Flying combat missions in France in mid-May 1940 he recorded his first aerial victories, a Geman fighter and bomber both destroyed in less than a minute in unusual circumstances -- many were to follow. By the end of the Battle of Britain and the subsequent Blitz, up to Augusi 1941, when was rested and posted to training duties, he was credited with 23 enemy aircraft destroyed, with several more probably downed with others damaged. In several encounters with the Luftwaffe he accounted for more than one aircraft. Commixssioned as an Acting Flying officer in early 1941, then to Acting Flight Lieutenant five months later. March 1942 saw him returned to operations to with 602 Squadron for a short time, during which he damaged two of the of the new FW 190 fighters, although these out-performed his Spitfire. During a short spell at 81 Group HQ in mid-1942 he was promoted the Acting Squadron Leader tthen appointed to a Boscombe Down unit developing the air-to-ground rockets, later carried by low-level attack fighters. Late in 1942 he moved to a special unit instructing on ground attack tactics. A major move came in mid-1943 when posted to India, where his first task was instructing the pilots, transferring from bomber squadrons, in fighter pilot skills. In August 1944 he was on duties at 3rd Tactical Air Force HQ before taking command of No 17 Squadron, where he increreased his enemy aircraft destroyed count with one Japanese fighter while based in Malaya during the latter stages of the war against Japan, again flying a Spitfire. When hostilities ended his Squadron proceeded to Japan on the carrier HMS Vengence with its Spirfires landed ashore in Japan in lighters, but with Lacey making the first take off of this fighter from the recently occupied foremer enemy country. At the end of 1939-45 conflict his confirmed score of 27 aerial victories placed him in top group of RAF "aces". Lacey remained in the RAF post-war. In his Air Force career aircraft he flew ranged from his training days in Tiger Moths to Hawker Hunter jets. Richard Bicklers prortrayal of Lacey shows him to be not to be iof the type-cast image of an air force office, but one of independent throught and action, greatly respected and regarded by his sub-ordinates although firm in his orders, smpathetic to those he considered were unfairly judged and concious of the needs of others --, traits contrasting to the courage, determination and skills that made him the top scoring RAF fighter pilot of the Battle of Britain. First edition (Robert Hale) of 1962, 189 pages including chronological table of Lacey's RAF career, including promotions, decorations, postings, combat records, including enemy aircraft types, details of all aircraft mentioned in text, air craft types flown by Lacey, plus general index. Illustrations include wartime Lacey portrait painted by Eric Kennington and 12 b/w photos. Grey hard covers with gilt spine titles are NF, text block is excellent, no inscriptions. Colour tone art DJ is VG+, unclipped with three short tears top edge tape repaired.
