Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: very near Fine. First edition thus. 4to. [13], 2-460, [8] pp. Maroon cloth boards with a large decoration in gilt on the front board, gold lettering on the spine. Illustrated endpapers and pastedowns. Frontispiece, eight plates with several images in color, and numerous additional black and white illustrations. Mandelbrot achieved great fame with his discovery of fractal geometry, a mathematical theory that can be used to represent the "roughness" of things such as the shape of mountains or coastlines. He coined the term in 1975 in his book Les objet fractals: forme, hasard et dimension. Mandelbrot changed and augmented his original work on the subject in his 1977 book Fractals: Form, Chance, and Dimension. The present work was intended to replace both of those previous books and contains extensive additions and revisions reflecting new developments. The Fractal Geometry of Nature has proven to be exceedingly popular and firmly established the importance of fractals in the mathematical community as well as popularizing Mandelbrot's ideas. Beginning with the second printing of this book in 1982 (and in each of the many subsequent printings) one final small addition was made and thus these later printings have 468 numbered pages rather than the 460 of the first printing. A sharp copy of Mandelbrot's magnum opus, rather difficult to find in the first printing. A touch of toning to the jacket's spine panel, else a Fine example.

First Edition
First edition, first printing, of this richly illustrated work on the beauty of mathematics. The author expands the applications of the "Mandelbrot set" and relates his fractal theories to natural phenomena such as galaxies, rivers, and coastlines. "We are taken on a personal tour through a museum of science (or, as some mathematicians of yore complained, a gallery of monsters)" (Chakerian, p. 177). Mandelbrot (1924-2010) was the first to use computer graphics for the purposes of fractal geometry, using new IBM technology to create geometric structures. He coined the term "fractal" from the Latin "fractus", meaning shattered glass. He applied the irregularity and chaos of fractals to numerous fields, including mathematics, physics, economics, biology, and linguistics. In particular, he showed how fractals offer a more accurate model of nature than conventional surfaces such as spheres. The present volume is Mandelbrot's revision and expansion of Fractals: Form, Chance and Dimension (1977), which was in turn a revision of Les Objets fractals: Form, hasard et dimension (1975). Don Chakerian, "The Fractal Geometry of Nature by Benoit B. Mandelbrot", The College Mathematics Journal, vol. 155, no. 2, March 1984. Quarto. Original red cloth, spine and rear cover lettered in gilt, fractal design on front cover in gilt, fractal patterned endpapers. With dust jacket. Frontispiece, 7 colour plates, illustrations throughout. Jacket unclipped: a fine copy in fine jacket.

Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. First edition. A fantastic association copy signed in the year of publication by Benoit Mandelbot and inscribed to John Hubbard, "For John Hubbard / Cordially / Benoit Aug 31, 1982. / John: This book was [?] written long ago and delivered to the publisher on Aug 15, 81, as I told you when we talked last February [?]". A lovely inscription from the man hailed as the "father of fractals" to one of the mathematicians who shortly thereafter co-discovered the Mandebrot Set with Adrien Douady in 1985, naming it of course for Mandelbrot. Bound in publisher's red cloth stamped in gilt. Very Good boards lightly bowed and lightly edge-worn, pages lightly toned. In an unclipped dust jacket with rubbing, toning, light edge wear and a crease to the front flap. Greatly expanded from Mandelbrot's 1977 book entitled Fractals. A great association copy between two mathematicians whose impact on 20th century mathematics was immense.
