Book First Edition Signed
Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Robert Hines (illustrator). 1st Edition. Stated First Edition. Signed and inscribed by the author, John K. Terres, on the first front end paper. The inscription, to June Havoc, reads: 'A great lady, a great actress, with a great heart! And compassion for all the small creatures of the world. Love and best wishes, John K. Terres, October 27, 1985. ' Ms. Havoc was a 'Canadian American actress, dancer, writer, and stage director. She was a child vaudeville performer under the tutelage of her mother Rose Thompson Hovick. She later acted on Broadway and in Hollywood, and stage-directed, both on and off-Broadway. She last appeared on television in 1990 in a story arc on the soap opera General Hospital. Her elder sister Louise gravitated to burlesque and became the well-known striptease performer Gypsy Rose Lee.' I purchased this book from the home of June Havoc some years ago. The book is in really nice condition. You can see it in the photos. The covers are exceptionally clean. The black lettering on the spine is very bright. The edges and corners are in excellent shape. The spine ends have just the typical little bit of crinkling. The page edges look very clean. The middle page edge is deckled or rough-cut. They did an excellent job. The book is square and the spine is straight. The pages are nicely tight from cover to cover with nicely tight covers as well. The inside covers and end papers are a light brown. They are very clean and free of wear. The same can be said for all of the pages. Scrolling through I'm not finding any instances of soiling. I'm also not finding any creasing. There are no markings. No attachments. And the author's signed inscription is the only writing to be found anywhere in the book. The illustrations are by Robert Hines. They are all in excellent condition. The dust jacket has held up well. It's clean. There is a teeny bit of loss at the top edge of the spine and at a couple of corners. There are a few very tiny edge tears, and there is one thin 1/2 inch tear off the bottom edge of the middle edge between the rear cover and the rear flap. It's not something that anybody would be able to see, particularly after the fitting of the protective cover. There's also a crease off the rear bottom edge. The flaps are in solid shape, with just a little bit of crinkling at the top edge of the rear flap. The jacket is NOT price-clipped, not clipped at all. It will be fitted with a protective cover after the photos are scanned. Here are some of the chapter headings: Teaching a Bird to Fly, A Falcon Captures Her Prey, How a Bird Flies (Flapping Flight), Adventures with Vultures, How High Do Birds Fly?, How Fast Do Birds Fly?, Strange and Wonderful Maneuvers in the Air, Dangers of Bird Flight, Flying Underwater, How It All Began, Epilogue-- Farewell to a Falcon. There are also three Appendixes: 1) Some Technicalities of Bird Flight, 2) Tables having to do with Wings Spans, Weights, and Body Lengths, also Wingbeats Per Second, and 3) Common and Scientific Names of Birds Mentioned in the Text. The book ends with a Bibliography and Index. From the dust jacket: 'John K. Terres has devoted a lifetime to patient observations of birds and other wildlife, and in Flashing Wings he enriches his own wide experience with a vast array of facts and episodes gleaned from the literature and from his years as Editor of Audubon Magazine. In addition to his thorough text, or a comprehensive bibliography and appendix.'. Inscribed by Author(s).

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Association copy, inscribed in the year of publication on the front free endpaper: "To Francis Harper--With every good wish of he author. John K. Terres, December 14, 1968." Francis Harper was noted for his studies and retracing of John and William Bartram's travels in the South, in particular in Florida and Okefenokee Swamp. His papers are held by the University of Kansas. John K. Terres was a prolific writer of natural history, in particular ornithology, and for 12 years was the editor of Audubon Magazine. He won the John Burroughs Medal for natural history writing for From "Laurel Hill to Siler's Bog: The Walking Adventures of a Naturalist," about his explorations of the biological reserve in the North Carolina Botanical Garden. Francis Harper retired to Chapel Hill, which likely explains their overlap. A fine book in a very good jacket with a bit of wear to corners and a half-inch tear to the upper spine. Illustrated by noted wildlife illustrator Robert Hines. // Wood River Books specializes in place-based and environmental literature, with a special passion for association copies and notable inscriptions.
