Book First Edition
Hard Back. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Poor. First Edition Stated. 490 Pages Indexed. Brown boards with map endpapers. No apparent defects noted. Dust jacket is tattered and in two pieces however the flaps are complete. This is the narrative history of the American fur trade and the story of the opening up of the West in early 19th century. The focus is on the American Fur Company founded by John Jacob Astor in 1808 to oppose British control of the fur trade in the Northwest Territory. The hero of the book is Ramsay Crooks, who became Astor's field manager. Crooks was a shoemaker's son from Scotland who, as a teenage Indian trader on the Missouri River, met Lewis and Clark homeward-bound from the Pacific. Shortly thereafter he joined Astor's bold Astoria enterprise and made the crossing of the continent with Hunt's overland party. On their return trip, he and Robert Stuart discovered South Pass, destined to be the gateway of the western migrations. Here is an extraordinary cast of characters from the huge, redheaded Robert Dickson, who masterminded the Indians for Great Britain during the War of 1812; to frosty Robert Stuart, Astor's overlord on Mackinac Island; and Kenneth McKenzie, the lawless king of the Upper Missouri. Courage, endurance, relentlessness, avarice, and frontier humor all play their part in as the American Fur Company seizes the fur trade.
