Cloth at the spine a little toned, and with some wear to the backstrip ends and corner tips. Quite light browning to the free endpapers. Handsome former owner bookplate to the front pastedown, and the neat signatures of two subsequent owners to the head of the front free endpaper, one being that of the late Anne Hudson (1938-2021), Professor of Medieval English at Oxford University, with her occasional pencilled (mostly) marginal notes, and some quite extensive notes on the William Thorpe chapter. The fore edge of two or three text leaves carelessly cut resulting in several tiny areas of marginal loss. A good copy of this important collection of medieval writings edited by the noted Shakespearian scholar.

He became Keeper of Printed Books at the British Museum, was Secretary of the Bibliographical Society, 1893-1934, editor of The Library and joint author of the well known Short-Title Catalogue.
