Two volumes. First printed in the Philosophical Transactions in the same year, the eleventh series presents Faraday's researches on electro-statical induction. This series was "undertaken with a view to test an idea which he had long possessed, that the forces of attraction and repulsion exercised by free electricity are not the resultant of actions exercised at a distance, but are propagated by means of molecular action among the contiguous particles of the insulating medium surrounding the electrified bodies, which he therefore calls the dielectric. By this idea he [was] led to some very remarkable views upon induction, or in fact upon electrical action in general" (Thomson, Phil Mag, July 1854, p. 50). Itwas in the area of experimental electricity that Michael Faraday accomplished his life's most important work as well as the work for which he is best known. In 1831, experimental science was transformed when his experiments proved that frictional electricity from the clouds was the same as animal electricity, such as that of the electric eel. "Faraday repeated all the experiments in this newly discovered field and added many more of his own. In one of his notebooks we read: â??Change magnetism into electricity.' He experimented patiently, but with no success. Yet it seemed clear to him that if a current-bearing conductor possesses a magnetic field it should in some way be possible to induce an electric current by means of a magnetic field. "In 1931 in a series of never-to-be-forgotten experiments, Faraday in quick succession discovered the laws of induced currents, and in so doing laid that foundations for the unparalleled triumphs of modern electricity. He made the fundamental discover that whenever lines of magnetic force are made to cut across a conductor [imagine a magnet moving across a wire] or a conductor is made to cut across lines of force, a current is induced in the conductor. In this basic principle lay the invention of the dynamo, the electric motor, the induction coil and transformer, the x-ray, and a host of revolutionizing application of this mysterious form of energy. Without this discovery, electricity would still be the plaything of science. Immediately following this, Faraday in a series of researches worked out the laws of electrochemical action and invented the first accurate electric measuring instrument" (Darrow, Masters of Science and Invention, pp. 76-77). ALSO INCLUDED: Grove, William R. "On a new Voltaic Combination" AND "On Voltaic Series and the Combination of Gases by Platinum" in The London, Edinburgh, and Dublin Philosophical Magazine and Journal of Science Volume 13, 1838, pp. 430-431 AND Volume 14, 1839, pp. 127-130. FIRST EDITIONS OF GROVE'S DESCRIPTION AND DEMONSTRATION OF THE INVENTION OF THE FIRST FUEL CELL - an improved form of voltaic cell which Faraday used in his demonstrations before the Royal Society. Simply put, fuel cell technology generates electricity within the chemical reaction created via the combination of hydrogen and oxygen. Together the two papers trace the evolution of Grove's fuel cell. CONDITION & DETAILS: 2 Volumes. London: Richard and John E. Taylor. (8.5 x 5.5 inches; 213 x 138mm). [viii], 486, [258 page index], 4. Ex-libris bearing only a small paper label at the spine and a discreet stamp on the title page. Bound in three quarter polished black calf over marbled paper boards. GIlt-ruled and lettered at the spine. Minor rubbing and scuffing; tightly and solidly bound. Slight age toning and foxing. Both volumes are in very good condition.

First Edition
1st Edition. FIRST EDITION OF TWO IMPORTANT PAPERS BY MICHAEL FARADAY, EACH PUBLISHED AS PART OF HIS LANDMARK TWENTY-NINE PAPER "EXPERIMENTAL RESEARCHES IN ELECTRICITY" SERIES. Also included, a significant paper by Thomas Graham on the motion of gases; also, an important paper by Gideon Mantell on the iguanodon. Handsomely bound, the volume is complete with Parts 1 & 2 and includes 43 plates. FARADAY: Faraday discusses magneto-crystallic force and the abnormal behavior of various crystals in a magnetic field. Faraday "hoped that when â??properly understood' the various phenomena examined in terms of their magnecrystallic, crystallographic and optic axes would come under â??one law [that] will include all these phenomena'" (Kox, No Truth Except in the Details). Faraday was an English chemist and physicist often thought to be the best experimentalist in the history of science. During Faraday's earlier experiments on electro-magnetical theory he had "observed some phenomena that led him to a belief in the existence of another form of force, distinct from either paramagnetic or diamagnetic force, which he called the magne-crystallic force. He had been experimenting with some slender needles of bismuth, suspending them horizontally between the poles of an electro-magnet. Taking a few of these cylinders at random from a greater number, he was much perplexed to find that they did not all come to rest equatorially, as well-behaved bars of diamagnetic bismuth should do, though, if subjected to the action of a single magnetic pole, they did show this diamagnetic character by their marked repulsion. After much experimentation, he ascribed this phenomenon to the crystalline condition of the cylinder. By experimenting with carefully selected groups of crystals of bismuth, he believed he could trace the cause of the phenomenon to the action of a force which he called the magne-crystallic force" (Houston, "Electricity and Magnetism"). We separately offer this paper dis-bound. GRAHAM: Graham was the first to carry out diffusion experiments on gases and in 1833 stated what is now called Graham's law of diffusion. The paper included here, "On the Motion of Gases" reports "a phenomenon which he named effusion of gases into a vacuum through a thin plate, "leaving no doubt of the truth of the general law, that different gases pass through minute apertures into a vacuum in times which are as the square roots of their respective specific gravities, or with velocities which are inversely as the square roots of their specific gravities," and that "the effusion-time of air of different temperatures is proportional to the square root of its density at each temperature" (Science Direct, 24, 2, 2013). MANTELL: Gideon Mantell "is best known for his discovery of the first dinosaur ever to be described properly - "a momentous event" and noted that the Iguanodon "was the first dinosaur ever to be described properly" (Dictionary of Scientific Biography, IX, 87). This paper supplements Mantell's earlier papers and comprises an account of some important additions which he has lately made to our previous knowledge of the osteological structure of the colossal reptiles. ALSO INCLUDED: Richard Owen's On the development and homologies of the carapace and plastron of the chelonian reptiles. CONDITION & DETAILS: Philosophical Transactions Parts 1 & 2 for the year 1849. Complete Ex-libris with bearing only two Royal College of Surgeons stamps. 4to. (11.5 by 9 inches; 288 x 225mm). [18], 523, [1], 15 , [4]. 43 plates. Handsomely rebound in aged calf. 5 raised bands at the spine, each gilt-ruled; gilt-tooled fleur-de-lis at the spine. Red and black, gilt-lettered spine labels. Tightly bound with new endpapers Very slight toning within. By any measure, near fine condition inside and out.
London: Richard and John E. Taylor, 1849. Large 4to. (300x231mm). Original blank wrappers. Some small tears. Back strip proffesionally repaired with Japanese paper. With presentation-inscription by Faraday in ink on title page: "William Thomson Esq. | St. Peters College | from the Author." (2),41,(1:blank) pp. First edition, rare offprint-issue, of "one of the great classics of chemistry and physics". With an extremely attractive presentation-inscription from Faraday to William Thomson (later Lord Kelvin), who delivered the first mathematical exposition of Faraday's researches in electricity. Thomson provided an important theoretical direction for Faraday's interpretation of his own experiments and the two colleagues motivated and inspired each other to a degree that the research and knowledge of electricity they possessed and published would not have would have been reached until many years later. The paper itself is of the utmost importance, since much of Faraday's groundbreaking research published in 1831-1839 contained many shortcomings and errors which are corrected in this publication. "The corrected second edition of volume 1 is preferred, because the first edition (London 1839) contained many errors". (Neville, Historical Chemical Library)."In June 1849 William Thomson wrote to Michael Faraday suggesting that the concept of a uniform magnetic field could be used to predict the motions of small magnetic and diamagnetic bodies. [.] There had been an important exchange of ideas between the two, who had a common interest in explaining voltaic, electrostatic, magnetic, optical, and thermal phenomena. They meet every year between 1845 (where they became acquainted) and 1849". (Gooding, Faraday, Thomson, and the Concept of the Magnetic Field). In 1845 Thomson gave the first mathematical development of Faraday's idea that electric induction takes place through an intervening medium, or "dielectric", and not by some imprecise "action at a distance". He also devised a hypothesis of electrical images, which became a powerful agent in solving problems of electrostatics, or the science which deals with the forces of electricity at rest. It was partly in response to his encouragement that Faraday undertook the research in September 1845 that led to the discovery of the Faraday Effect, which established that light and magnetic (and thereby electric) phenomena were related.Faraday was also the direct cause of William Thomson's work on the transatlantic submarine telegraph cable. In 1854, Faraday had demonstrated how the construction of a cable would limit the rate at which messages could be sent, which later would be termed the bandwidth. Thomson immediately looked into the problem and published his response the same month Faraday had published his observations. Thomson expressed his results in terms of the data rate that could be achieved and the economic consequences in terms of the potential revenue of the transatlantic undertaking. In 1855, Thomson stressed the impact that the design of the cable would have on its profitability. Thomson's work on the cable consequently resulted in a complete system for operating a submarine telegraph that was capable of sending a character every 3.5 seconds. He patented the key elements of his system, the mirror galvanometer and the siphon recorder, in 1858.From 1831 to 1852, Michael Faraday published his "Experimental Researches in Electricity" in The Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society. These papers contain not only an impressive series of experimental discoveries, but also a collection of heterodox theoretical concepts on the nature of these phenomena expressed in terms of lines of forces and fields. He published 30 papers in all under this general title. They represent Faraday's most important work, are classics in both chemistry and physics, and are the experimental foundations for Maxwell's electro-magnetic theory of light, using Faraday's concepts of lines of force or tubes of magnetic and electrical forces. His many experiments on the effects of electricity and magnetism presented in these papers lead to the fundamental discoveries of 'induced electricity' (the Faraday current), the electronic state of matter, the identity of electricity from different sources, equivalents in electro-chemical decomposition, electrostatic induction, hydro-electricity, diamagnetism, relation of gravity to electricity, atmospheric magnetism, and many others."Among experimental philosophers Faraday holds by universal consent the foremost place. The memoirs in which his discoveries are enshrined will never cease to be read with admiration and delight" and future generation will preserve with an affection not less enduring the personal records and familiar letters, which recall the memory of his humble and unselfish spirit." (Whittaker, A History of the Theories of Aether & Electricity, p. 197).
