Paperback. Condition: Very Good. In 1939 when war broke out, Dame Freya Stark was already established as a traveller and writer. Her knowledge of the Middle East and her genius for friendship made her ideally suited to the task of influencing public opinion for the Allied cause. Interspersed with letters dealing with her private feelings and preoccupations - Freya Stark faced her share of danger during the siege of the British embassy at Bagdad. This book is a memoir of seven years spent in distant and dangerous lands. The author also wrote The Southern Gates of Arabia and The Coast of Incense. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Trade paperback. The fourth volume in her autobiography - this covers the years during World War II when, despite her personal sufferings (the man she loved killed by the Germans, her mother imprisoned by Mussolini) she used her knowledge of the middle East to act as a liason to the Arabs and to the United States, and to counter the Nazi propaganda in the area. Illustrated with photographs, chronology, index. 297 pp. Good overall - some spine slant, contents clean.

Equipped with a knowledge of Arabic and attached to the Ministry of Information and the Foreign Office for war service she found that Persuasion was her job. This book describes the remarkable way in which she carried it out. In Aden she assisted with the Arab News Service; in the Yemen she combated the Fascist influence operating the only cinema projector in the country; in Egypt she formed and expanded the Brotherhood of Freedom during the anxieties of the North Africa campaigns; in Iraq she extended the Brotherhood committees throughout the country in opposition to the German influence that so nearly proved fatal to the Allied position in the Middle East and was caught in the siege of the British Embassy in Baghdad during the German~inspired revolution. She continued her work in America, where the Zionist problem was poisoning Anglo~American relations, and in Canada. She travelled in India at the request of Lord Wavell at the time of the Simla Conference; and finally flew home to Italy, on the heels of the German retreat in the north. Freya Stark's genius for describing people and places and her stimulating sense of historical perspective turn an autobiography into a picture of heroic times.
