A first edition copy of this copiously illustrated dictionary on notable sea painters, complete with the original unclipped dustwrapper. This text was written by the curator of Oil Paintings at the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, E. H. H. Archibald. Archibald presided over the four thousand oil paintings held at the museum (a collection that includes more portraits than any other English collection, bar the National Portrait Gallery) for thirty years, and was hence a well respected authority on the subject of maritime art, as demonstrated within this text. This text was published by the 'Antique Collectors Club', that specifies in publishing essential reference books on a wide range of subjects, ranging from decorative arts and fashion, to design and photography. Collated, complete with numerous monochromatic illustrations and twenty nine coloured plates, including a colored frontispiece of a detail from Willem van de Velde the Younger's work 'A Dutch States Yacht'. In the publisher's original cloth binding with the original unclipped dustwrapper. Dustwrapper, slightly bumped to upper extremity of wrap. Slight edge wear to wrap. Price label tipped to lower extremity of front flyleaf of wrap. Externally lovely. Pictorial endpapers. Front hinge very slightly strained between frontispiece and title page.
