First edition (first printing). A near fine copy in a near-fine, price-clipped dust jacket. Inscribed by Morris, "11/1/83. To Martin Hames, with best wishes to a distinguished teacher of literature and history-Willie Morris." Hames was an Alabama teacher. One of his obituaries began, "In the annals of The Altamont School-and the old Birmingham University School that preceded it-perhaps no teacher has been more beloved, revered, renowned and feared than the late Carl Martin Hames." In 2016, the novelist Katherine Clark Clark won Willie Morris Award for Southern Fiction for her debut novel, The Headmaster's Darlings, whose main character is based on her mentor and English teacher, Martin Hames.
