Beide verlassen das Schloss und sehen wie die Armee eines Rivalen Iidas einmarschiert. Er kehrt freiwillig zum Stamm zurück und trauert um den toten Shigeru und um Kaede, die er nun nicht mehr sieht. Der Pfad im Schnee. Originaltitel: Grass for his Pillow. Nach dem Tod von Iida und Shigeru schließt sich Takeo dem Stamm an, von dem er väterlicherseits abstammt, und schwört ihm ewige Treue. So verlässt er aber auch seine Liebe Kaede, die von ihrer einzigen gemeinsamen Nacht schwanger ist, was Takeo aber nicht weiß. Da Takeo nichts anderes als sein Pferd Raku besaß, gab er ihr dies als Geschenk. Kaede ihrerseits reist zurück zu ihrem alten Heim, muss aber feststellen, dass nichts so ist, wie es in ihrer Kindheit war. Die Ernte ist ausgeblieben, und der Vorrat an Essbarem ist sehr knapp. Als sie ihren Vater sieht, weiß sie, wieso sich alles im Dorf verschlechtert hatte: Ihr Vater ist verrückt geworden, weil seiner ältesten Tochter ein schlechter Ruf anhaftet.
