First Edition
First Edition. 4to, 160pp; pictorial cloth with map endpapers, issued without dust jacket. The first printing of this popular monograph about Bishop's adopted country, undertaken as a commission for the LIFE world Library series of extensively illustrated overviews of various countries. Bishop was unhappy with the liberties that the Time/Life editors took with her texts. When she was asked to re-write the section about the troubled recent political history of Brazil for a new edition in 1963, she refused. Offered together with a later edition, making clear the extent of the revisions. MacMahon A5. Extremities rubbed; slight lean; very good.
