First Edition
First edition, first UK issue. 8vo. xvi, 367, [1] pp. Original brown cloth, spine lettered in green, top edge in red, fore and bottom edges untrimmed, dust jacket (jacket slightly worn with a few tiny nicks to extremities, spine panel faded, still a very good copy). Oxford, Basil Blackwell. First UK edition, using the same sheets as the first American edition published the same year by Basic Books in New York. A foundational text of modern libertarianism, originally published in response to John Rawls' A Theory of Justice (1971), being a classic statement on free-market libertarianism, proposing an entitlement theory of the minarchist state over more virulent forms of anarcho-capitalism. The book is widely ?recognised as a classic of modern political philosophy, widely credited with breathing new life into the discipline in the second half of the twentieth century. It effectively moved libertarianism from a relatively unimportant subset of political philosophy to the centre of the discipline? (Bader & Meadowcroft). From the library of the American-born Oxford philosopher James P. Griffin (1933-2019), with his neat initialled ownership inscription to the front free endpaper.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Presentation copy inscribed by Nozick to Harvard colleagues Hilary and Ruth Anna Putnam on the front endpaper. Very Good in an about Very Good jacket, unclipped ($12.95), faded at the spine, rubbed at the edges, a few small chips and closed tears, some soiling to the surface. Brown cloth, faded at the edges, pushed at the corners, with green gilt lettering on the spine. Square, bound with some reading wear and a red top stain with a few small splashes on it, some pencil marginalia and pencil and pen notes on the rear endpaper. The National Book Award-winner in 1975, Anarchy, State, and Utopia is an important work of modern libertarian philosophy, one that Putnam criticizes in his 1983 essay "How Not to Solve Ethical Problems." Both Putnam and Nozick joined Harvard in 1965, with Nozick going on to serve as Department Chair from 1981 to 1984. An remarkable association in an already remarkable book.
