Octavo, black boards (hardcover), gilt letters, 205 pp. Near-Fine, with former-owner bookplate; in a Fine dust jacket. From dust jacket: The CGM (Flying) is a very rare deocation. Only 110 were awarded. When it was instituted in November 1942 it was to right the anomaly that existed between officers and non-commissioned airmen in that there was no equivalent to the DSO which was awarded to commissioned officers only. Nothing existed for the non-commissioned airmen between the DFM and VC. The acts of bravery that brought the recipients this medal show how much it was needed. The author has researched into all the acts of outstanding barvery in action with the enemy, all but the last during the SEcond World War. The first recipient of the medal was Flight Sergeant Leslie Wallace, a wireless operator with 83 Squadron Pathfinder Force, who put out fires in his Lancaster and despite his wounds returned to the radio till the crippled craft arrived back in England. The last was awarded in Vietnam to Flight Sergeant John Couglan for assisting the wounded into a helicopter in the face of fire from the Vietcong. In between are a host of tales recounting incredible feats of courage. Aviation, Military HIstory, British HIstory. yslic.
