The Tragedy of Faust is considered the magnum opus of writer and statesman Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832), and is considered to be one of the finest works of German literature. The play tells the tale of Mephistopheles, the devil, and a wager made with God that e has the ability to lure the deities most favored man, Faust, to abandon the purity of his scholarly pursuits in favour of the temptations of sin. Following a lengthy debate with the demonic figure, Faust agrees to the selling of his soul and descends into a seductive world of vice and moral abandon. The work serves as a parable warning against the dangers of desire, towards both wealth and bodily flesh, and championing the salvation that may be found in heaven should one strive for redemption.
