Book
Hardcover. Condition: VG. Dust Jacket Condition: None. Photographs (illustrator). 1st. None. 1st. 21.5cm By 13.5cm 15cm. This well produced, attractive little volume was published to mark the 75th anniversary of a an unustual educational institution, a preparatory school at the small town of Winchester, South Canterbury. Its founder was Joseph Orford, a Cambridge graduate in law who came to NZ to escape life in the law in London. After several years in NZ, service in the NZ Contingent to the Boer War, and several teaching and university positions, he determined there was need for a preparatory school in the South Island and settled on Winchester as its location. He remained headmaster for 17 years, when he died of pneumonia, but the school lived on, attracting a growing roll of students. The book is a fine record of a small school opetrated on traditional English lines. It tells of the changes in staff and concept of Waihi School in three sections, 1907 -24, 1924-60, 1961-82. Lists include a roll of honour from two world wars, chairmen, headmasters, staff, prefects and student roll. 102 pages, 29 b/w photos. White hard covers, with dark blue front decoration titles and spine titles, with light handling marks. VG. Few small adhestions to spine. FFEP may have been removed, otherwise internally excellent.
