Condition: Good. Isaac is a photographer in his mid-thirties, travelling through Europe. It is the post-Cold War Europe of a united currency, illegal immigration and of a globalised homogenous culture. In his mother's mountain village he encounters a Balkan vampire. Subsequently, as his journey continues across Italy, Eastern Europe and Britain he discovers that ghosts keep appearing in the photographs he takes, providing clues to a family secret and tragedy.Parallel to Isaac's story we are in the Greece of World War II. A peasant family is asked to provide protection to a Jewish boy fleeing the Germans. It is this boy who will become the vampire. From the mountains of Greece to the inner-city streets of 1960s Melbourne, we trace the journey of this malevolent force as it feeds on generation after generation of Isaac's family, seeking revenge and justice. FROM CHRISTOS TSIOLKAS: 'In attempting to trace back through the mythologies, lies and truths of history, I want to examine how the legacies of the past still actively disturb our sleep in the present. Isaac's story is written in a contemporary idiom, in the first person, as he reflects on his alienation from Europe, on what it means to be an artist, to be a man in love, to be an ethical human in a supposedly post-ideological age.I am also attempting to understand the longest standing of all European racial legacies: anti-Semitism. The vampire is not only the restless spirit of a dead boy. It is also the golem, the Christ Killer, the killer of children. It is this legacy that Isaac must face.' 414 pages.

Paperback trade, very good condition, pages faintly toned as common, minor edgewear. 379 pp. Novel by noted Australian writer David Ireland about a modern man being relentlessly ground down in his workplace. They work at the Puroil Refining Termitary and Grinding Works as prisoners of foul conditions, exploitative management and anonymous shareholders. Isolated and alienated, reduced to seeking oblivion through alcohol and assembly line sex, they are the products of a society which offers an infinite freedom of choice but no alternatives, where it is safer to be shackled in chains than to be free to fend for themselves. His second novel, originally published in 1971, and winner of the 1972 Miles Franklin Award.

First (trade) edition. Paperback original (it appears the paperback by Vintage and the hardcover by Knopf Australia were published simultaneously). An octavo-size paperback. Fine in wrappers as issued, in an added clear archival jacket for this copy. Australian author's Booker Prize-winning novel, set partly in 1943 in the despair of a Japanese POW camp on the Thai-Burma death railway. The Australian editions (both paperback and hardcover issues) precede other overseas editions. Essentially only the trade paperback appeared in bookshops (with at least 12 printings so far in this format, reprints noted by a small number half-way down the copyright page): the hardcover issue was published in very small numbers, scarce now and destined to become even scarcer, making the first printing of this trade paperback issue the most affordable first edition. The ISBNs are different in each version, and to complicate matters the ISB numbers in paperback and hardback mention only their own existence, giving no indication on the copyright page that another issue exists. Ironically the paperback first is considerably taller than the hardcover first (234 mm against 217 mm): the generous page margins were trimmed for the hardcover version. Each issue carries the handsome cover design by Mary Callahan, using a painting by Diane Masters.

1st printing ed. Paperback thick octavo, as new condition. 418 pp. Queensland had the Fitzgerald Inquiry and the Moonlight State. New South Wales has Eddie Obeid, a minister in the Labor Government. Two senior reporters from the Sydney Morning Herald expose the brazen misdeeds of Australia's most corrupt politician, perhaps on a scale not exceeded since the days of the Rum Corps. The powerbroker not only made and unmade premiers, but he and his family profited from government leases (mining, cafes, marina). (First printing edition: this printing was withdrawn because of a misidentification of Chris Brown on page 58, who threatened legal action, being two people with the same name.).

1st ed. Paperback octavo, very good condition, minor edgewear. 382 pp. Kate McClymont examines the complex business relationship between Michael McGurk and Ron Medich that lead Medich to order the murder of McGurk. Based on dozens of interviews, including with associates of the main characters, some of whom, fearing retribution, have asked to remain anonymous. It is not just a Sydney story, the strands traverse Moscow, Brunei, Indonesia, and Hawaii, and involve property deals, fraud, conspiracy, false identities, kidnapping and a miniature Koran. Kate is one of the best-known investigative Australian journalists (Sydney Morning Herald).
