Virtually 'As New'. Would make a very attractive reading copy. NOT a Book-Club or Ex-Library. 8vo. (8.75 x 5.75 x 1 inches) . Translated by Adrienne Dixon. Language: English. Weight: 17 ounces. Hardback with DJ. Harry Kurt Victor Mulisch (1927 2010) was a Dutch writer of distinction. He wrote more than 80 novels, plays, essays, poems, and philosophical reflections. Mulisch's works have been translated into over thirty languages. Along with Willem Frederik Hermans and Gerard Reve, Mulisch is considered one of the "Great Three" (De Grote Drie) of Dutch postwar literature. His novel The Assault (1982) was adapted into a film that won both a Golden Globe and an Academy Award. Mulisch's work is also popular among the country's public: a 2007 poll of NRC Handelsblad readers voted his novel The Discovery of Heaven (1992) the greatest Dutch book ever written. He was regularly mentioned as a possible future Nobel laureate and won the 2007 International Nonino Prize in Italy. His gift for writing with clarity about moral and philosophical themes made him an enormously influential figure in the Netherlands and earned him recognition abroad. In 2009 he received the Golden Century Award, for his entire oeuvre. Last Call exhibits Mulish's mastery of plot, style and language. These are rare qualities in any country literature and certainly a seldom found quality in the Dutch context, shared with few luminaries such as G. S. Vestdijk and Hella Haasse. The main character is an old and tired, last but second rate representative of a first-rate theatrical family. His pedigree consists of vaudeville, farces, operetta's and such like, extending all the way back into WWII Germany, after which he only managed to direct amateur theatre and bar keeping. He finds himself discovered by a modernist theatre group, who want to use his name and his classical style. They offer him the lead in a play about a play (The Tempest) - the farewell performance of an old lion of the theatre of several decades ago. The book is about life versus theatre, about age, beauty, truth, about love even, all against the backdrop of a colourful Amsterdam of the 70-80s. The book lightly and humorously covers some large themes, is satirical, but with treates the characters with respect. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 288 pages. pages First Edition USA (2003), so stated. Gilt embossed white linen boards/Fine. DJ/Fine. English author Charles Nicholl specializes in works of history, biography, literary detection, and travel. An account as the region appeared to eyes of the West some 30 years past --- of many a story of "border crossing", real or imaginery, of what was seen and not seen.

Hailed by the New York Times's Janet Maslin as a "startlingly talented writer", Currie once again moves and provokes us with his latest genre-bending novel, one that asks why literal veracity means more to us than deeper truths. --The protagonist of Flimsy Little Plastic Miracles is named Ron Currie, Jr., and as you'd expect, he's a lot like the guy who wrote the book. Both of them are writers; both of their fathers are dead; both are deeply in love with women whose beauty and allure are matched only by their elusiveness. When Currie the character travels to a small Caribbean island to begin a new book about the woman he loves, he inadvertently fakes his own death, which turns out to be the best career move he's ever madeuntil he learns that the one thing that the world will not forgive is having been told a deeply satisfying lie"---, any image directly beside this listing is the actual book and not a generic photo./// SIGNED ---GUARANTEED to be AVAILABLE///---sizes are approximate (generally within 1/8 inch)--- Size: 6.25w x 9.25h Inches. Soft cover. Condition: Good. Reprint. The unexpurgated edition. Dreiser's unsparing story of a country girl's rise to riches as the mistress of a wealthy man - now fully restored to the authors original version. Differing greatly from the expurgated version published in 1900, Penguin's landmark edition (copublished with the University of Pennsylvania Press) follows Dreiser's original manuscript, restoring for the first time the novel's bleak, dramatically consistent endings, its full characterizations, its profanity and sexual references, and its real place and character names. This edition features an introduction by Alfred Kazin, a selected bibliography, and a note on the text.(We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions etc.).
