At top margin of free front blank is the neat signature of a previous owner: Rabbi Samuel Berliant, spiritual leader of Congregation Tifereth Israel In Jackson Heights, Queens, since 1934, who died in 1972 at the age of 67. He lived at 35-31 88th Street in Jackson Heights, was one of the organizers of the Rabbinical Council of America, representing the Orthodox rabbinate in this country, served as its president from 1950 to 1952. He was born in Richmond, and was ordained in 1929 after studies at the Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary of Yeshiva University. He was also a graduate of the City College of New York and received a master's degree from Columbia University in 1938. He was made a Doctor of Divinity by Yeshiva University in 1968. Within the Rabbinical Council, Rabbi Berliant had served as chairman of the Caplaincy Procurement Committee. He was instrumental in organizing the voluntary draft of chaplains adopted by major Orthodox seminaries at the time of the Korean conflict, and had served also on the chaplaincy commission of the National Jewish Welfare Board. He also was chairman of the council's membership committee, Kashruth committee and court of honor. He had been chairman of the Jewish Committee on Scouting here and an adviser to the Religious Committee of the Girl Scouts of America.

He was a reader in Jewish studies at Oxford for two and a half decades, until 1964, when he moved to Jerusalem, as a visiting professor at Bar-Ilan University. After a heart attack and being falsely accused of unorthodoxy, he left Bar-Ilan, and spent the rest of his life editing the Encyclopaedia Judaica and teaching at Queens College and Stern College in New York. Roth wrote and published profusely, with O. K. Rabinowitz's 1966 bibliography listing 572 items, though the actual number is over 600, including translations and editing of Haggadot. (Lipman, EJ).
