Hardcover with dust jacket. Condition: good condition. Jehangir Ratanji Dadabhoy Tata was born in France in 1904. He was educated in Paris and Bombay. He will primarily be remembered not only as one who has helped create wealth for the people, but also as one who has fostered the concept that it should be held in trust for the people. - From within the pages of one book - and for the first time - emerges the considered thought of a man who has straddled the twentieth century's amazing progress from civil aviation to atomic energy, both of which he has helped to pioneer in a country which the world was wont to consider a mere geographic expression. - 'When in 1938, my colleagues, all much senior to me, in a moment of mental aberration elected me Chairman of Tatas,' he said in his address at a Special Convocation of the University of Bombay, 'I resolved to dedicate myself and the firm to the task of carrying on Jamsetji Tata's vision of a politically free and economically strong India and to play a worthy role in its development.' - His was a major role in the ushering in of the era of air transport to India. He has similarly acted as a catalyst in the bringing of the atomic age, several decades later. Closely associated with the steel industry for over four decades during his tenure as Chairman of the Tata Iron and Steel Company, whose Jamshedpur plant, at one time, was the biggest in the British Empire, he has encouraged the growth and diversification of Indian industry into a host of new endeavours from cosmetics, chemicals and electronics to genetics. - The country where he was born has made him a Commander of the Legion of Honour. His. own country has honoured him with a Padma Vibhushan. He is a Knight Commander of the Order of St. Gregory the Great. He wears the Knight Commander's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. He is an Honorary Air Vice Marshai of the Indian Air Force and has been named International Management Man. - In January 1983, the Rotary International in an award described J. R. D. Tata 'a symbol of enterprise and spirit of adventure, an inspiration to youth and a shining example of dedication and Service to the country.' - During these fifty odd years, he has been something of a seer and a prophet, sometimes applauded abroad, often ignored at home. He is the last of a select band of Indians who has helped lift a whole sub-continent out of serfdom into freedom. 155 p.
