Kariye from Theodore Metochites to Thomas Whittemore: One monument, two monumental personalities.= Kariye: Bir anit, iki anitsal kisilik. Theodoros Metokhites'ten Thomas Whittemore'a. [Exhibition catalogue]. Texts by Holger A. Klein, Robert G. Ousterhout, Natalia Teteriatnikov, Dimiter Angelov, Jeffrey M. Featherstone. Displayed at Pera Museum, Kariye, from Theodoros Metokhites to Thomas Whittemore; One Monument, Two Monumental Personalities is comprised largely of objects and documents on loan from abroad, the exhibition narrates the story of Kraiye, one of the globally renowned monuments of Istanbul, as well as the extraordinary tales of two of its 'builders', who lived six centuries apart. At one end stands fellow townsman Theodoros Metokhites, Byzantine thinker, poet and politician, who shaped Kariye at the turn of the 14th century and adorned it with priceless mosaics and frescoes. On the other end is American renaissance man and archaeologist Thomas Whittemore, who passionately and meticulously restored this structure to its former grandeur in the 1940s, consequently bestowing it to the world of culture and art as a museum. In between lies the unconventional story of a structure shaped by the footprints of these remarkable men. The former church of the monastery of Christ of the Chora, better known today as the Kariye Camisi or Kariye Museum, is one of the most impressive Byzantine monuments to survive in the modern city of ?stanbul. Founded probably as early as the sixth century, rebuilt by members of the imperial family in the late eleventh and early twelfth centuries, and splendidly restored by the Byzantine humanist, poet, and prime minister Theodore Metochites between 1316 and 1321, the church of the Chora Monastery is today considered one of the most outstanding examples of Late Byzantine art and architecture to survive. While the building itself was already known as the 'Mosaic Mosque' during the nineteenth century, the fame of the church's rich and complex interior decoration rests by and large on an extensive restoration campaign initiated by the American scholar and philanthropist Thomas Whittemore, founder and director of the Byzantine Institute of America from 1930 to his death in 1950. It was the aim of this exhibition, to explore the history of the "Kariye" through its representation over the centuries, and to pay homage to the two men who were responsible for its restoration and conservation in the fourteenth and twentieth centuries respectively: Theodore Metochites and Thomas Whittemore. The exhibition furthermore aimed to celebrate the work of those who have helped to preserve the architecture of the Kariye and its extraordinary cycle of mosaics and frescoes during the 1940s and 1950s.

[Exhibition catalogue]. Istanbul: Suna ve Inan Kirac Vakfi Pera Muzesi, 2015. 4to., 165 p., color ills. In Turkish and English. Paperback. New ISBN: 9786054642410 CATALOG: Painting & Sculpture KEYWORDS: History of art Sculpture Curated by Giacometti Foundation?s Director Catherine Grenier, the exhibition offers a chronological and thematic itinerary covering the two definitive periods of Alberto Giacometti?s life ?before and after the Second World War- and touches upon his friendships with the leading artists and intellectuals of his period in Paris. Devoted to Giacometti?s early works, the first part of the exhibition demonstrates the influence of Giovanni Giacometti, the father of the artist and a Swiss Post-Impressionist painter himself, on Giacometti?s output during these years and his role in his son?s development. The exhibition also illustrates Alberto Giacometti?s relations with Post-Cubist artists and the Surrealist movement between 1922 and 1935, one of the important sculptures series he created during his first years in Paris, and the critical role he played in the art scene of the period. The second part of the exhibition brings together the artist?s key works from his mature period, most of which were made between 1950 and 1960, a time when the artist had altered his perception of the world and depicted reality not as it was but as he saw it. This was also the period when he focused on the human figure. As in his paintings, Giacometti worked nonstop on his sculptures, either from nature or from memory, trying to capture the universal facial expressions. In the 60s, Giacometti paid homage to Paris, the city where he lived, by drawing its streets, cafes, and more private places like his studio and the apartment of his wife, Annette. These drawings would make up his last book, Paris sans fin (Paris Without End). A wide selection of lithographs from these drawings accompanies the exhibition, along with archival material (letters, sketches, publications) and a selection of photographs.

Istanbul: Suna ve Inan Kirac Vakfi Pera Muzesi, 2017. 4to., 112 p., color ills. In English and Turkish. Paperback. New ISBN: 9786054642687 CATALOG: Painting & Sculpture KEYWORDS: Painting The exhibition centres on the art of Mersad Berber, who is one of the greatest and most significant representatives of Bosnian?Herzegovinian art from the second half of the 20th century. Inspired by the great European masters, from Renaissance to Art Nouveau, Berber?s works exemplify the deep, opaque whites of his journeys through the fairy tale landscapes of Bosnia to the dark, macabre burrows of Srebrenica. The exhibition catalogue includes essays by Aida Abadzic Hodzic, the curator of the show and a well-known art historian, teaching at the Academy of Fine Arts in Sarajevo, and by Edward Lucie-Smith, the art critic and the honorary consultant of the project. While Abadzic Hodzic concentrates on how the art of Berber reflects all the multi-layered cultural history of his country; Lucie-Smith, who had worked with the artist in several exhibitions, focuses on his art within the European art history scene.

Istanbul: Suna ve Inan Kirac Vakfi - Pera Muzesi, 2018. 4to.,134, [1] p., color ills. In Turkish and English. Paperback. New ISBN: 9786054642809 CATALOG: Social history KEYWORDS: Galatasaray High School Education Istanbul - Constantinople On the occasion of its 150th anniversary, School Square Galatasaray offers a fresh perspective through contemporary art, to this deep-rooted school, which has hosted cultural and artistic events along with being an educational institution encouraging and supporting its students? artistic tendencies and creativity throughout its history. The exhibition takes on the name of ?school? (mektep) in reference to the name of the institution still remembered as and called ?the school? by its graduates even today, to the history of the building and its character as a place of education. This word play thus both references the Galatasaray Square with which the school is inextricably and necessarily intermeshed and envisages the structure of the Galatasaray High School with its garden and surrounding walls as an intellectual square where contemporary artists shall meet and debate. The site and context-specific works in the exhibition by the artists Elvan Alpay, biriken (Melis Tezkan, Okan Urun), Hera Buyuktasciyan, Antonio Cosentino, Burak Delier, Hasan Deniz, Cemal Emden, Baris Gokturk, Ali Kazma and Vahit Tuna relate to the location, function, history and space of Galatasaray High School by means of painting, sculpture, installation, photography, video, sound and performance. Although the graduate artists of Galatasaray High School and the reflection of their personal experiences on their artistic practices have been considered valuable, room has been made for perspectives to be brought in by artists looking upon the school, an organic part of the city for 150 years, from the square ? namely, from the outside, to those peeking in while passing by, and to those who perhaps live in its vicinity and have it in their thoughts. Rather than providing an art-historical selection of sorts, the School Square Galatasaray exhibition aims to gaze into the past from the vantage point of the present and pass on new works to the future. The exhibition catalogue presents three articles, which provides different perspectives on culture of Galatasaray. The curator of the exhibition Celenk Bafra?s essay on the relationship between the school and the square contextualizes the works in the exhibition. Besim F. Dellaloglu presents his thoughts about what it means to experience Galatasaray High School. Murat Alat uses his personal experience to contemplate on the idea of school and education in a more general sense.

Paperback. New ISBN: 9789759123802 CATALOG: Painting & Sculpture KEYWORDS: Russia tsarist Russian Image painter Art Scenes from Tsarist Russia: 19th Century Russian Classics from the State Russian Museum Collection not only presents art lovers a selection of masterpieces being displayed for the first time in Turkey, but also offers scenes of Russian history through Russian Realist paintings. The masterpieces from the rich collection of the State Russian Museum in St. Petersburg reflect every aspect of life including labor and poverty, the world of children, public festivals, war and death, scenes from bourgeois life, and revolution. In literature, music, and fine arts, the "Russian spirit" is depicted as a world of emotions in which love, sorrow, and death run rampant. After the 1860s, Realist conventions came to dominate the genre scenes. Progressive artists of Russia began portraying the fundamental problems of the period such as social injustice, serfdom (until 1861, peasants were considered as property of landowners in Russia), child labor, subjugation of women, and poverty. Daily life thus became a point of interest in art. In the 1870s and particularly after the 1880s, a more positive attitude came into view; the artists gradually diverged from depicting painful worlds. The public was no longer the victim, but a powerful subject. A tendency to poeticize folklore, as well as the public perception of nature and the universe began to emerge. Social problems were addressed in their entirety; analysis replaced condemnation. The exhibition which includes artists from Repin to Makovsky, Yaroshenko to Shishkin and many others, presents not only the Russia of the period with all its different aspects, but with its themes and characters offer audiences a unique experience, one similar to reading the works of the great Russian writers such as Nikolai Gogol and Fyodor Dostoevsky.
