Book First Edition
(Paperback, 1979). 1979 1st edition, paperback issue. 8vo paperback (138 x 215mm). Pp158. Colour frontispiece of flies, b/w photographs, illustrations. Covers used and tanned, slight browning, but a solidly intact second-hand paperback. A good introduction to catching big trout from small stillwaters such as Avington. The author was a well-known figure in the early days of small-water / big-fish trout fishing, and held several records. Some of the record fish certificates are illustrated here, as are some of the trout. Oddly, one large rainbow, easily identified by markings, is photographed on three different pages throughout the book and described as being 16, 17 3/4, and 18 pounds, implying that they were three different fish. Funny that! Chapters include: Tactics; General comment on flies; Nymphs and bugs; Dry flies; Lures; Leaders; Rods; Lines; Fly reels and other accessories; Records and other matters; Big trout of other species. .

"Four of the leading authorities on freshwater fishing - each one a household name - have finally got together to produce a book with the sole aim of helping anglers catch more fish." Chapters include: 'Secrets' of success; The influence of the weather; Feeding habits; Senses; Intelligence; Hookbaits; Groundbait; Groundbaiting devices; Rods; Reels; Lines; Hooks, leads and swivels; Nets; The link-ledger; Bite-indicators; Night fishing; [Float] design and application; Some finer points of float fishing in running water; Special floats and their uses (the trotter; the shot-dragger; the ducker; the wire avon; stret-pegging; aspects of lift-fishing; the windbeater; the zoomer; the cocktail); Float-ledgering; Paternostering; Spinning; Trailing; Fly-fishing; An ingenious method. .
