I used their concept of efficiency for time series analysis. During the summer of 1983, I had an opportunity to visit The Australian National University, and could elucidate the third-order asymptotics of some estimators. I express my sincere thanks to Professor E.J. Hannan for his warmest encouragement and kindness. Multivariate time series analysis seems an important topic. In 1986 I visited Center for Mul tivariate Analysis, University of Pittsburgh. I received a lot of impact from multivariate analysis, and applied many multivariate methods to the higher order asymptotic theory of vector time series. I am very grateful to the late Professor P.R. Krishnaiah for his cooperation and kindness. In Japan my research was mainly performed in Hiroshima University. There is a research group of statisticians who are interested in the asymptotic expansions in statistics. Throughout this book I often used the asymptotic expansion techniques. I thank all the members of this group, especially Professors Y. Fujikoshi and K. Maekawa foItheir helpful discussion. When I was a student of Osaka University I learned multivariate analysis and time series analysis from Professors Masashi Okamoto and T. Nagai, respectively. The papers that they presented at meetings of their national or regional societies had to be 'sanitized' to the point of misrepresentation. They were misunderstood. The mood was grim, depression was lurking. He decided that urgent action was required: a European gathering of mathematical psychologists was called in April 1971. Not being foolhardy, however, he took the precaution of choosing Paris as the meeting place. Around thirty mathematical psychologists received an invitation. They all came, justifying at least Paris's reputation. The meeting took place at the 'Maison des Belges' of the Cite Universitaire, Boulevard Jourdan, in front of the Parc Montsouris. As far as everyone remembers, the meeting was a full success. A happy birth had taken place. This editor then irresponsibly accepted a position in a university in the US, leaving an infant to the whims of the passers-by. Fortunately, a godfather came along. The next meeting took place in Nijmegen, in November 1971, under the loving care of Eddy Roskam. A tradition was established. The third meeting was in Oxford (1972); then in Marseilles (1973), Regensburg (1974), Stirling (1975), Stockholm (1976) . . . The infant became a toddler, then a vigorous child. As noted repeatedly in other reviews (eg, Cohen, 1973; Novak, 1980), it was recognized in early Greek civilization as an adjunct to divination; indeed, it has now become customary, if not obligatory, to refer to the Oracle at Delphi before considering the more recent history of the subject. According to legend, the priestess at the Temple at Delphi would achieve communion with the Gods by inhaling the naturally-occurring gas that emanated from a fissure in a rock. Inhalation would induce a trance-like state. Her mystical observations and utterances while in this state were interpreted by the Temple Prophet and issued as divine pronouncements to those seeking guidance. Incenses, perfumes and spices have probably always been used in ceremonial worship and religious ritual. However, in sofar as it is possible to make the distinction, these substances have been used primarily for their aromatic qualities rather than for their intoxicating effects.
