Chief Inspector Roper, sent to investigate ageing film star Rita Cavallo's mysterious disappearance, is soon stepping over a whole body. Original Wraps. Condition: Very Good ++. Dust Jacket Condition: No Jacket ( as Issued ). First Edition. An uncorrected UK proof ( Advanced Reader's Copy ). This is a bright copy, without previous ownership inscriptions. The covers are bright and unfaded with just the tiniest of tiny creases at the corners - insignificant. The main body of the spine is scuffed and lightly nicked - the spine is otherwise solid and intact. The pages and closed page edges are clean - there is a touch of trivial soiling to the bottom edge. The binding is solid with no cracked hinges or loose pages. Given the fragility of proof copies, this is in very nice condition. Paypal accepted.

hardcover, 6½" x 9½", with dust jacket 194 pages Eighteen b&w photographs. He was the founder's grandson; his son is the fifth Charles Scribner, but it befell the author of this book to bring his inheritance (the family publishing company) kicking and screaming into the twentieth century. He made mistakes; he was fortunate; but his resolve and integrity were never in doubt. He had Max Perkins on his staff, and Ernest Hemingway on his mind, and he tells an excellent 'insiders story'. Charles Scribner Jr headed the firm 1952 - 1986, when he merged it with Macmillan US. VERY GOOD book in VERY GOOD unclipped dust jacket.

Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Both volumes of the first edition which should be more accurately subtitled "the Late John Murrays" since the work covers both the original founder of the great publishing house, and his son, John Murray II. Each volume has a frontispiece; papa in Volume I, son in Volume II. This is a very good set, with both volumes being tightly bound and very sound. There are a few ownership rubber stamps scattered throughout (dated 1892) and a bookseller's label on the pastedown of Volume II, otherwise very clean and unmarked internally. Blue cloth looks nice and fresh with the gilt lettering crisp and bright. Some slight wear to extremities and some browning to the untrimmed edges. Excellent copies. Expect a little extra shipping fee for these two heavy books. JS.
