The first book club edition of this fascinating work concerning the Austrian mountaineer Heinrich Harrer's experiences in Tibet. The first book club edition of this work, published in the same year as the true first edition, in the publisher's original cloth binding, with the original unclipped dust wrapper. Heinrich Harrer (1912-2006) was an Austrian mountaineer and Nazi SS sergeant. This work is an autobiographical travel book, based on his experiences in Tibet, during a fascinating period of history between 1944 and 1951. It covers his escape from a British internment camp during the Second World War, and the interim period before the Communist Chinese People's Liberation Army began the 1950 Battle of Chamdo, when the Chinese attempted to reestablish control over Tibet. Illustrated throughout. In the publisher's original cloth binding, with the original unclipped dust wrapper. Externally, cloth is in excellent condition. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean apart from spotting to the fore edge and to the first and last couple of pages. Dust wrapper is bright but spotted to the spine and chipped to the upper extremities, with a closed tear to the rear of the wrap. Very Good. book.

The book has an introduction by Peter Fleming and plates throughout the book. In very good condition, the binding is tight with a slight lean, the boards clean and the lettering on the spine bright. There is slight shelf wear to the top and bottom edges of the spine. The end papers and pages are free from tears. The top edge retains its original red tint. There is a book plate and a neat owners name, address and date to the front end paper. There is foxing to the fore and bottom edges. The unclipped dust jacket, protected by a clear, removable cover is in fair condition with loss to the top edge of the spine, a tear and shelf wear to the bottom edge of the spine and loss to all the corners. Will be dispatched wrapped in bubblewrap and in a cardboard box.
