Prev. owner's name stamped inside front and back covers. ; A bright, solid book.; B&W Illustrations; 8.90 X 5.80 X 0.70 inches; 239 pages; "Gerry Andrews (1903 - 2005) had many adventures in his 102 years. He was a rural school teacher, a forester, a soldier and a surveyor. His developments in aerial photography dramatically changed forestry in BC in the late 1930s and assisted the Allies in the D-Day landings. He referred to the process of mapping the landscape in an airplane as ploughing photographic furrows up and down the sky at 16,000 feet. As BC's surveyor-general from 1951 to 1968, he supervised the mapping of the provinces large construction projects, often usual aerial photography.During all this time, he saw most of BC and made many friends along the way. Surveyors in the field looked forward to his visits because he always had a kind word, a genuine interest in their work, and a red flannel sock containing a bottle of hooch. In Furrows in the Sky, historian Jay Sherwood tells the story of this mans remarkable life, based on his personal correspondence, unpublished manuscripts and diaries, interviews with people who knew him, and published articles by and about him. The book includes a selection of the many photographs that Andrews took during his adventures. ".

Book
Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. In 1934, in the middle of the Great Depression, millionaire Charles Bedaux spent $250,000 in an attempt to cross northern British Columbia in five motorized vehicles. The Bedaux Expedition ranks as one of the most audacious and unusual events in the province's history. Bannock & Beans tells the story of this extravagant failure from the perspective of one of the cowboys who worked on Bedaux's team. Bob White's reminiscences, recounted in the tradition of the cowboy storyteller, describe the hardships of cutting trails and hauling supplies on horseback, the beauty of the wilderness landscape and many of the unique aspects of the expedition. Bannock and Beans also reveals the complex character of the expedition's leader, Charles Bedaux, a French entrepreneur who made his fortune in the United States. The book includes White's experiences in Bedaux's attempts to develop a ranch in northern BC after the expedition. Editor Jay Sherwood supplements with original Bedaux Expedition correspondence and photographs to show Bedaux's strong attachment to the remote wilderness area of northern BC from 1926 to 1939.Bannock and Beans provides new information and a fresh perspective on this unique event in BC's history. White's memoirs take us back to the campfire stories of people who were part of the vast wilderness that still covered much of the northern part of the province 75 years ago. The Bedaux Expedition, which celebrates its 75th anniversary in 2009, is one of the most unusual events in the history of British Columbia. This book describes the hardships of the journey, the beauty of the untouched wilderness, and the few inhabitants of the area. Light wear only, lightly bumped bottom edge. ; A bright, solid book. ; B&W Illustrations; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 202 pages; "In 1913, the BC government hired G.B. Milligan and E.B. Hart to each lead a small expedition that spent 18 months exploring the northeastern part of British Columbia. These expeditions helped provide the first detailed information of this region. Unfortunately, World War I began just as these men completed their work, and the information they gathered got filed away and forgotten in the shadow of the Great War. Now, on the centennial of these expeditions, historian Jay Sherwood's new book documents the Milligan and Hart expeditions. He reveals what their expeditions accomplished and he shows readers what northern BC was like 100 years ago.".

"This book features important works of historical and contemporary Nuu-chah-nulth art and culture shown in the Royal British Columbia Museum's travelling exhibition of the same name. But this book is more than an exhibit catalogue. With the help of many Nuuchah-nulth voices, Martha Black places the objects in context with the culture and history of these west-coast people, whose territories lie along the outer coast of Vancouver Island, Canada, and on the Olympic Peninsula, U.S.A." "HuupuK[superscript w]wanum and Tupaat are Nuu-chah-nulth words that designate everything a chief owns, including valued hereditary names and songs, objects and dances, rights and privileges, lands and resources. These Nuu-chah-nulth concepts introduce non-aboriginal people to the profound philosophical, spiritual and personal connections that these objects had - and continue to have - with Nuu-chah-nulth communities." - Publisher. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Peter Macnair and Alan Hoover recount the history of Haida argillite carving since it began in the early 1800s, and they describe more than 200 examples from the extensive collection of the Royal BC Museum Argillite is a dense, black shale mined from a quarry on Haida Gwaii (Queen Charlotte Islands), reserved for the exclusive use of Haida carvers. Argillite works are unique in style and character, ranging from ceremonial pipes and model poles to elaborate platters and chests. "The careful scholarship of Peter Macnair and Alan Hoover has ensured that The Magic Leaves remains an authoritative text on the types, subjects and history of argillite carving. Argillite carvings made for the souvenir, ethnographic and fine-art markets maintained and developed indigenous stylistic and narrative traditions. The beautiful black slate of Haida Gwaii continues to be a vehicle for profound expressions of Haida history and artistic innovation. - Dr Martha Black, from the Foreword. Haida artists have created and sold argillite carvings since the 1820s. Unique in style and character, they ranges from ceremonial pipes to model poles, animal-form bowls to elaborate platters and chests.
