"in preparing Freedom on the Wallaby we have therefore sought at poetry not only in published volumes, but in all the many magazines, newspapers and journals, literary, religious and political, which we have reason to believe might be of value to us, And in manuscripts, old and new, from every part of the country. But actually is intended to be more than a garland of such poems. It is designed to reveal in its total elegy something of the story of the stroke in people. Insofar as we have achieved our purpose, the book should be read almost as one continuous column the draws together the threads of popular history, the destitutes, the victories and the retreats, the struggle against the natural hurdles of drought, fire, flood and soil erosion, and the man-made hazards of poverty, ignorance and exploitation." First edition. Octavo-size paperback original. Fore-edge slightly foxed, some mild tape stains on the endpapers (from an improperly attached mylar protector, since removed), ownership signature on the half-title page, otherwise good in wrappers as issued, in an added archival jacket for this copy. The third in an acclaimed fantasy series (totalling 6 books), all published first in octavo-size paperbacks by Pinchgut Press of Sydney (all out-of-print, and all very scarce in the original format). Ashton Scholastic later reprinted the first two in the series in smaller, Penguin-size paperbacks, but apparently not the others. The other titles are: The Land Behind the World, The Lost Souls of the Twilight, The Crown of Light, Zaddick and the Seafarers, & Beyond the Outlandish Mountains. One knowledgable reviewer commented on the first part of the series: "taken together, these four novels represent a remarkable achievement: an Australian excursion into high fantasy which challenges comparison with Susan Cooper's "Dark is Rising" sequence and the early Alan Garner". Illustrated in b/w by Kim Gamble. Postage within Australia for this small/light book is set at $5, so please disregard any site default rate, which will be adjusted downwards before the order is processed by the bookseller.
