A Graham Greene classic where three men meet on a ship bound for Haiti, a world in the grip of the corrupt "Papa Doc" and the Tontons Macoute, his sinister secret police. Brown the hotelier, Smith the innocent American, and Jones the confidence man. These are the "comedians" of Greene's title. Hiding behind their actors masks, they hesitate on the edge of life. Robert Gordon Menzies was born in Jeparit, Victoria, in 1894. He read law at Melbourne University and was admitted to the bar in 1918. He entered federal politics in 1934, was Prime Minister of Australia from 1939 to 1941 and 1949 to 1963, when he retired at the age of 71. In 1956 he led the U.K. mission to Cairo to discuss the Suez Canal dispute with President Nasser. Created Knight of the Thistle in 1963, Sir Robert was the first Australian to be so honoured. In 1963 Sir Robert delivered the Jefferson Oration in Virginia, U.S.A. and in 1966 lectured at the University of Virginia. His published works include the Rule of Law During War (1917), Studies in the Australian Constitution (1933), Speech is of Time (1958), Central Power in the Australian Commonwealth (1966) and Afternoon Light. As well as having played a prominent part in Australian and world affairs, Sir Robert is keenly interested in cricket, rarely missing an opportunity to watch a Test match.
