Juan Terry Trippe (June 27, 1899 - April 3, 1981) was an American commercial aviation pioneer, entrepreneur and the founder of Pan American World Airways, one of the iconic airlines of the 20th century. He was involved in the development and production of the Boeing 314 Clipper, which opened trans-Pacific airline travel, the Boeing Stratoliner which helped to pioneer cabin pressurization, the Boeing 707 and the Boeing 747 which introduced the era of jumbo jets. Trippe's signing of the 747 contract coincided with the 50th anniversary of Boeing. After graduation from Yale, Trippe began working on Wall Street. Interested in operating to the Caribbean, Trippe created the Aviation Corporation of the Americas. Based in Florida, the company would evolve into the unofficial United States flag carrier, Pan American Airways, commonly known as Pan Am. Pan Am's first flight took off on October 19, 1927, from Key West, Florida, to Havana, Cuba. Trippe quickly recognized the opportunities presented by jet aircraft and ordered several Boeing 707 and Douglas DC-8 airplanes. Pan Am's first scheduled jet flight was operated on October 26, 1958 by 707 Clipper America from Idlewild International Airport (now JFK) to Le Bourget Airport, Paris. The new jets allowed Pan Am to cut the flight time nearly in half, introduce lower fares, and fly more passengers in total. In 1965, Trippe received the Tony Jannus Award for his distinguished contributions to commercial aviation. Pushed by founder and longtime C.E.O. Juan Trippe's relentless drive to expand the geographical and technological boundaries of aviation at that time, Pan American developed into a global corporate empire, with passenger routes across six continents, a chain of hotels, a prominent skyscraper in Manhattan, helicopter and business jet services, and involvement in space travel research and missile testing with the U.S. Government. Through a strategy of careful negotiation with heads of state, the acquisition of small airlines already in operation, and the establishment of joint ventures, Trippe was able to expand passenger and cargo routes throughout the Caribbean, Central America, and parts of South America as early as 1930. With Charles Lindbergh as a technical consultant, Pan American achieved the first Transpacific air route in 1935 from San Francisco to Manila, The Philippines, via Hawaii, Midway Island, Wake Island, and Guam. Subsequent innovations included the introduction of economy class travel, the adoption of jet aircraft, eventually partnering with Boeing to develop with first jumbo jet 747 and the long-haul 747SP, and the introduction of computerized reservation system. Baker, Weeks & Company was one of Wall Street's foremost institutional brokerage houses. Allen & Company LLC is an American privately held investment bank in New York. The firm, known for its deliberate avoidance of publicity, specializes in real estate, technology, media and entertainment. Single sheet, printed on both sides Original issuance--original signatures of Morris and Trippe.
