Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Profusely Illustrated (illustrator). View-painting in eighteenth-century Venice began with the emergence of Luca Carlevarijs and ended with the death of Francesco Guardi in 1793, followed by Napoleon's invasion and the fall of the Venetian Republic in 1797. In between, a constellation of remarkable painters captured the city in dazzling pictures which are among the greatest achievements in eighteenth-century art. Canaletto may be the artist popularly associated with Venice, but he had many rivals who competed for commissions, often from foreigners whose patronage was to determine the later course of Venetian view-painting. All the major figures are represented here - Bellotto, Carlevarijs, Guardi, Joli, Marieschi and Vanvitelli - together with fascinating contemporaries such as Cimaroli and Tironi. Charles Beddington sets the scene with an overview of the artists then working in the city, and draws on the latest research and scholarship to illuminate the complex stylistic relationships between them. Succinct, lively biographies for each artist are followed by short introductions to the works, grouped chronologically by artist. Each painter saw the same topography with his own unique vision; this beautiful book demonstrates the varied responses to the cityscape, with its ever-changing light, as well as to its spectacles and ceremonies. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. This thought-provoking book presents a lively introduction to the 20th century's most important artist, Pablo Picasso. Picasso was a passionate student of the European painting tradition, and his memory for images was voracious. Naturally drawn to Spanish masters Velázquez and Goya, he also engaged with such figures as Rembrandt, Delacroix, Ingres, Manet, and Cà zanne. Picasso repeatedly pitted himself against these masters, taking up their signature themes, techniques, and artistic concerns in audacious paintings of his own. Sometimes his "quotations" were direct, other times highly allusive. Always, Picasso made the implicit case that it was he in the 20th century who most forcefully reinvigorated the European tradition. This book showcases his extraordinary work, where we witness the daring transformation of the art of the past into, in Picasso's own words, "something else entirely." Published by the National Gallery Company/Distributed by Yale University Press. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. For decades the most continually provocative of British artists, Richard Hamilton (19222011, right) was long concerned with the great themes of Western painting. At the time of his death, he was completing plans for an exhibition at the National Gallery, London, to include the first public showing of what turned out to be his final work. Based on Balzac's short story, The Unknown Masterpiece, it depicts three masters of paintingPoussin, Courbet, and Titiancontemplating a reclining female nude and reflecting on the meaning of art. As with much of Hamilton's late work, the image was generated by computer but over-painted by hand. Knowing he would not complete it, Hamilton decided to show three preparatory versions simultaneously. In addition, he selected thirty paintings tracing the development of his art, featuring single-point perspective and the depiction of interior spaces, the sacred imagery of the Italian Renaissance, and allusions to the art of Marcel Duchamp. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Renowned for his physical and psychological naturalism, Diego Rodriguez de Silva y Velazquez (15991660) is considered one of the greatest painters to have ever lived. Official court painter to King Philip IV (16051665), he created astounding effects of illusion in his minimalist and elegantly composed workswhich range from genre and history scenes to portraits. His paintings had an enormous impact on 19th- and early-20th-century artists such as Degas, Renoir, and Picasso, and Manet famously first described him as the painters painter. With over 150 illustrations and an in-depth chronology, this beautifully produced and comprehensive book surveys Velazquezs entire career and explores his universal popularity. Fascinating essays by world-class Velazquez scholars address the artists life and technique, examining his studies in Seville and Italy to his final great works at the court of Philip IV. They also place his works in the context of 17th-century European painting and discuss how and why his works have resonated so strongly with the generations of Post-Impressionist and modernist artists. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Museum visitors today usually see pre-16th-century Italian painted altarpieces exhibited alone, as single paintings. Yet this beautiful catalogue shows that these works were once part of decorative, integrated schemes, and the original experience for viewers of the paintings was significantly different from our own. Focusing on Italian altarpieces from the second half of the 13th century to the very end of the 15th, the book investigates the original functions and locations of altarpieces as well as the circumstances of their dislocations, dismantlings, and reconstructions. Regional variations are also analyzed, and the author examines altarpieces' formal and typological development, taking into account the wealth of related scholarship undertaken in the past thirty years. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. The English Romantic artist Joseph Mallord William Turner (17751851) was hailed as the "painter of light" for his brilliantly colored landscapes and seascapes. He drew much influence from the French painter Claude Lorrain (c. 1604/5?1682), who was a vital force in Turner's artistic practice from his formative years until the end of his working life. So great was Claude's influence that Turner stipulated in his will that his works hang alongside Claude's in the National Gallery, London. This book examines the ways in which Turner consistently strove to confront Claude's achievement and legacy. He had encountered Claude's works in salerooms and in the collections of his aristocratic patrons, and applied what he had learned to the British countryside, producing views of the Thames valley that transform it into an idyllic pastoral scene reminiscent of the Roman Campagna. For the balance of his career, Turner continued to pit himself against Claude, paying homage even as he continually sought to go beyond the accomplishments of his master.
