Denslow and John R. Neill. As in original, pages not numbered. The Wizard of Oz, 1st published in 1900 was the most famous novel of the American author Lyman Frank Baum (1856-1919). It spawned over 13 sequels, a popular stage musical. The Wizard of Oz (1902), and the iconic 1939 movie, The Wizard of Oz, starring Judy Garland. The original 1900 art work was performed by W.W. Denslow, with whom Baum had collaborated in the past. However, a rift developed between the two and John R. Neill became the illustrator of the Oz book sequels. William Wallace Denslow, Jr. (American, 1856-1915) artist, children?s book illustrator, editorial cartoonist, designer, Roycroft artisan, author & self-publisher, set & costume designer, poster illustrator, and caricaturist. Denslow was best known for his beloved illustrations for author Lyman Frank Baum?s famous children?s book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, (1900) on which his fame mostly rests. John Rea Neill (1877?1943) was a magazine and children's book illustrator primarily known for illustrating more than forty stories set in the Land of Oz, including L. Frank Baum's, Ruth Plumly Thompson's, and three of his own. His pen-and-ink drawings have become identified almost exclusively with the Oz series. Used book w/ square corners looks never to have been read. Hardcover has orange boards with gold lettering on spine, in near new DJ. Interior tight, clean and unmarked.
