Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. The first of just three novels from this Scottish/American author who was, at the time of publication, married to the publisher, Harrison Smith. Whatever the merits (or otherwise) of the novel, this book is best known for the extraordinary dust jacket art. What a shame that for such a well-known and innovative design, the artist is uncredited and apparently unknown. Bibliographically, there seem to have been two issues of this book although I don't know which came first. One says (as with this copy), on the copyright page, "First Published in America 1930"; and the other says "First Published in America April 1930". Also the price of $2.50 on one is printed on the top corner of the front dust jacket flap, and on the other it's printed centered on the bottom of the flap. This copy has some shelfwear on the bottom edges, but is near fine with the red spine lettering (often dulled) looking very bright and fresh. The price-clipped dust jacket is very good, with minimal edgewear, and rubbing along folds and bottom edge which has obscured the publisher's name and address printed at the bottom of rear panel. An attractive copy.
Hardcover. Condition: As New. Dust Jacket Condition: No Dustjacket. 1st Edition. Translated from the Russian by Bernard Guilbert Guerney; dark blue endpapers; looks unread.
