Istanbul: Suna ve Inan Kirac Vakfi Pera Muzesi, 2016. 4to., 282 p., color ills. In Turkish and English. Paperback. New ISBN: 9786054642557 CATALOG: Painting & Sculpture KEYWORDS: History of art Painting Giorgio de Chirico is one of the most extraordinary figures of the 20thcentury, a period marked by consecutive avant-garde movements. During this rich period that brought to fore different forms and modes of expression rather than themes in painting, de Chirico, as distinct from his contemporaries, created a unique metaphysical universe in which he carried the fresh themes he developed and carried to the center of his painting. Following the first metaphysical works he produced between 1910 and 1918, which also served as a source of inspiration for the Surrealists, he gravitated towards a different search with the changing dynamics of the post-World War I period. He was interested in ancient Greek and Roman art and re-interpreted the works of Old masters. He revisited metaphysical painting when he turned 80. He completed his artistic career with the new themes he developed in this area and the canvases he painted with lighter colours compared to his early period. The exhibition catalogue includes writings by the artist and encompassing essays focusing on de Chirico's artistic career and the Metaphysical Art, which he invented, as well as exemplifying his various periods ranging from his earliest works to his last ones.

Turk resminde bir modernlesme oykusu. Curator: Ahu Antmen. [Exhibition catalogue]. Istanbul: Suna ve Inan Kirac Vakfi Pera Muzesi, 2016. 4to., 205 p., color ills. In Turkish and English. Paperback. New ISBN: 9786054642519 CATALOG: Painting & Sculpture KEYWORDS: Turkish painting History of art A Story of Modernization in Turkish Painting aims to reveal the transformation from the Ottoman Empire into the Republican Era and how the few secretly made paintings at the turn of the 20th century created a new perspective for present times. The exhibition focuses on how artists strived to overcome the cultural resistance against artistic representations of nudity. Bare, Naked, Nude further explores: the evolution of the 'artist' from being a 'subject' to the Sultan to becoming an 'individual,' the pains of transitioning from one mindset to another; the struggle of identity between the artist and the 'Muslim-Turk'; the process of establishing a new perception devoid of sexuality of the female body that was solely associated with privacy and seclusion; and the association between the modern(ized) perception of art and the nude form.
