Index.First published in 1965, this study of foreign aid has now become a recognised classic on the subject. When the author did his research in the early 1960s, Nepal had already begun receiving assistance from an extraordinarily large number of countries and agencies. Donor interest in those initial years was driven mainly by the fact that the country occupied a strategic position as a frontline state against communist China. But, as the author discovered, there were good reasons to doubt the widely accepted assumption that all underdeveloped countries were being swept by a 'revolution of rising expectations'. He also reached the startling conclusion that, on balance, the impact of foreign aid has probably harmed, rather than furthered, Nepal's long-range prospects for economic growth and political stability. The evolution of Nepali society and economy over the last three decades of the 20 century seems to have supported Mihaly's thesis. 238 pp.

Nepal-India border problems. 4. Migration into the Tarai. 5. The politics of citizenship. 6. The politics of language. 7. Language, communication, and national integration. 8. "Regionalism and National Unity in Nepal is Frederick H. Gaige's acclaimed study of the Tarai and the Nepali state's misdirected and ineffectual attempts at integrating the region into the national mainstream. The theme of the book remains as relevant three decades later, especially at a time when the very essence of Nepali nationalism is being questioned and new forms of co-existence are being negotiated. The introduction by Arjun Guneratne updates the reader on the social and political context in which the book is being re-issued besides highlighting some of the more pertinent issues now at stake in the Tarai, indications of which are scattered throughout Gaige's book." The election results per group. 6. Possible minimum quotas. Appendices. This book identifies which of Nepal's many caste and ethnic groups have managed to get elected to parliament (including the two constituent assemblies) since 1991 without any assistance from affirmative action and which groups have generally been excluded from unless some measures of inclusiveness are applied. It also provides suggestions on how these excluded groups can be ensured representation though the application of minimum quotas.

From the foreword: "In the papers collected here the reader will find the collected wisdom of Nepal's finest historical anthropologist or anthropological historian of his generation. Most Nepali historians use the facts of the present to illuminate the past, but few do so with the sophistication and sensitivity of Prayag Raj Sharma. He argues for long-term continuities of culture and structure, but he is aware of the methodological pitfalls in doing so. Of the three crucibles he identifies which have made modern Nepali culture what it is today--the far west, the Kathmandu Valley, and the Tarai--Prayag Raj Sharma has carried out first-hand research in the first two areas and he has offered new intellectual syntheses and overviews relevant to all three. . . His lucid prose, his classical sociological approach, his engaged but balanced concern, and his deep appreciation of all aspects of Nepal's society and history mean that his corpus will stand for a long time to come as an essential witness to the struggles of post-1950 Nepal to come to terms with its Hindu Past.

Soft cover. Condition: As New. Contents: 1. Introduction. 2. Education. 3. Health. 4. Economic Status. 5. Human Development Indexes. 6. Summary of the Findings. The discourse on social exclusion in Nepal is very ideological, with some authors considering basically all Nepalis as socially excluded except for male Bahuns of hill origin. This is obviously not very useful for targeted economic and social interventions, and this book attempts to provide statistical evidence on what population groups are de facto excluded along a number of economic and social dimensions.
