Bierce, Ambrose, 1842-1914. The Monk and the Hangman's Daughter. Translated from the German of Richard Voss by Gustav Adolf Danziger and adapted by Ambrose Bierce. Introduction by Maurice Valency. Illustrations by Michel Ciry. New York: The Heritage Press, 1967, xiv, 80pp., good light brown cloth in slipcase, but spine slightly faded, edge of first few pages lightly bumped, light wear to slipcase. The publication is called "one of the most tangled episodes of his career. A young German-Jewish dentist, Gustav Adolph Danziger, had brought him a rough translation of a short novel by Richard Voss, Der Mönch von Berchtesgaden, which had appeared in a German monthly. Bierce rewrote the story from Danziger's translation, and the two signed a complicated contract dividing the rewards they expected to get. Their work appeared serially under the title The Monk and the Hangman's Daughter in the Examiner; then it was published by F. J. Schulte of Chicago, who went bankrupt. For years Danziger squabbled with Bierce over The Monk and the Hangman's Daughter" (M. E. Grenander). - In a 1931 article Frank Monaghan compared Bierce's version with that of Voss and found few differences. Bierce cannot qualify as the "author", he concluded.

As you stand in the Jefferson Memorial in Washington, you look up and see these words in the frieze of the main entablature, far overhead. The man who found the phrase, and suggested that it be inscribed in the Memorial, was Saul K. Padover, who, we think we can safely say, is the leading authority on Jefferson. That was in 1940, when the Memorial was being constructed. Padover was then assistant to Secretary of the Interior Ickes who had asked him to do some digging on the subject. The significance for those fortunate people who possess The Heritage Club edition of The Writings of Thomas Jefferson is that Professor Padover has edited and made the selections and presented with them a trenchant, appreciative Introduction, and with sectional Prefaces that enhance immeasurably one's understanding of the man and his works.".

Slightest suggestion only of dust-dulling to the spine bands and panel edges. Remains particularly well-preserved overall; tight, bright, clean and strong.; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 80 pages; Physical desc. : 80 p. Ill. , col. , 27 cm. Summary: On arriving at a rural monastery, the monk Ambrosius meets a young girl, Benedicta. She is shunned by the local community for being the daughter of the local hangman, but Ambrosius is drawn into a dangerous sympathy with her, and in defiance of the community and his superiors, he starts spending time alone with her. But when her virtue is corrupted by an impetuous young man, the stage is set for a battle between heart, mind, body, spirit, the sins of the past and redemption. Allegedly a rewriting from a lost German original, Ambrose Bierce's 1892 novel reads as a seamless, almost folktale-like masterpiece. Subject: Monks - Fiction. 1 Kg.
