Paperback. First Edition Thus [1988], so stated. First Edition Thus [1988], so stated. Near Fine in Wraps: shows little indication of use at all: the pages have tanned a bit ,due to aging, and the binding shows the slightest lean, but remains perfectly secure; text clean. Remains close to 'As New'. NOT a Remainder, Book-Club, or Ex-Library. 8vo. (8 x 5.3 x 0.5 inches). 191pp. Cover Illustration by John Jinks. Weight: 5.4 ounces. This edition Harper & Row: Perennial Library, published in 1988. Trade Paperback. Sly, detached humor has caused Brookner to be compared to Barbara Pym, but her vision is darker and more complex . Brookner's ambitions exceed those of Pym's genteel novels of manners and place her outside the genre, to which her writing, with its delicate shadings of character, otherwise seem suited. The story line here finds, Blanche Vernon, who, after twenty years of marriage, is alone; abandoned by her husband Bertie for a childishly demanding computer expert named Mousie. While Blanche finds this turn of events baffling, she feels that Bertie must have left her because of her overly sensible demeanor. Yet many of their mutual friends disagree. In fact, Blanche has come to be regarded as undeniably eccentric--making elliptical remarks that no one knows how to read, and chatting at great length about characters in fiction. She resolutely fills her unwanted hours with activities, maintaining her excellent appearance, drinking increasingly more wine, and, in an attempt to turn her energy to good works, becoming severely enmeshed in the life of a disordered young family.
