Potts was an American - Canadian plainsman, buffalo hunter, horse trader, interpreter, and scout. He was of Kainai (Blood) and Scots heritage. American Fur Company trader Andrew Dawson of Fort Benton, Montana (known as "the last king of the Missouri") adopted the young Potts. Dawson taught the boy to read and write and allowed him to mix with the Native Americans who visited the trading post to learn their customs and languages.
