Cloth, small 4to, xvi, 17-176 pp, numerous ills. From the blurb - "This is the first book to be written for the general collector on this topical subject - topical because the timelessness of early photographs has recently and suddenly become much more widely appreciated. The author begins with an outline history of photography, and then describes the famous photographers and famous photographic firms. Photographs by and of ordinary people are also covered, as are pictures of strange incidents taken in curious circumstances. This fascinating yet practical and well illustrated book then goes on to explain how to value and date old (which the author defines as pre-1900) photographs, and how to preserve them. There is also a list of interesting photographic collections to see in Europe and America and a select reading list of relevant books on this intriguing subject." Very Good in Very Good dustwrapper.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Photos and illustrations by Alfred Watkins (illustrator). Reprint. First published in 1925, this is a third impression of the new revised edition, published 1974. Some slight edge wear to top and bottom of largely white jacket and spine, some grubby fingerprints to bottom spine, some slight overall yellowing, some slight yellowing to page block, not price clipped (£3.75), no inscriptions, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg+ copy for its age. 234pp, illustrated. 'The Old Straight Track' was written by Alfred Watkins (1855-1935), a Herefordshire based antiquarian, businessman and photography pioneer, and first published in 1925. It is the book which introduced the concept of 'ley lines'. Although later adopted by the New Age movement to mean lines of 'earth energies', Watkins' original vision was simply of a system of alignments of natural and man made features in the landscape, used by our ancient forebears to orient themselves in the world. Although Watkins' idea has been challenged by archaeologists 'The Old Straight Track' remains one of the most inspiring books about the British landscape and our relationship with it and will encourage every reader to be more observant of our countryside and ancient heritage. Quite a scarce book, even in this later impression.
