"China Clipper (NC14716) was the first of three Martin M-130 four-engine flying boats built for Pan American Airways and was used to inaugurate the first commercial transpacific airmail service from San Francisco to Manila on November 22, 1935. Built at a cost of $417,000 by the Glenn L. Martin Company in Baltimore, Maryland, it was delivered to Pan Am on October 9, 1935. It was one of the largest airplanes of its time. On November 22, 1935, it took off from Alameda, California in an attempt to deliver the first airmail cargo across the Pacific Ocean. Although its inaugural flight plan called for the China Clipper to fly over the San FranciscoOakland Bay Bridge (still under construction at the time) , upon take-off the pilot realized the plane would not clear the structure, and was forced to fly narrowly under instead. Hardcover. Presumed first edition/first printing. 190, [2] p. From Wikipedia: "Mark Russell (born Mark Ruslander August 23, 1932 in Buffalo, New York) is an American political satirist/comedian. He also sings and plays the piano. Russell is known for his series of PBS specials, aired live at least four times a year between 1975 and 2004. His comedy specials were a mix of political stand-up comedy covering current events and musical parodies, in which Russell accompanied himself on his trademark American flag themed piano. While Russell's humor is known for skewering Democrats and Republicans alike, his humorous tirades have also poked fun at third party, independent politicians and other prominent political (and sometimes non-political) figures. In 2010, Russell announced his retirement from public performances and made his last public performance July 2010 in Chautauqua, New York. He continues to write political humor for various venues. By 2013, Russell had begun to tour and perform publicly again." Good in good dust jacket. Signed by author. Inscribed on page facing half-title. Newspaper clipping stain on half-title. Some page soiling.

Hardcover in dust jacket. Condition: Very Good. This book is hard-bound in white paper covered boards, with gilt stamping to the upper cover and spine, in a dust jacket with light scuffing and soiling. The binding is solid. The contents are bright and clean, with illustrations. This book is signed/inscribed by the illustrator, Edward Gorey on the title-page. - From the collection of Cuthbert Christian Thambimuttu (1945-2019) of Columbus, Ohio - known to many of his bookseller, author, and illustrator friends as "Tubby." He was persistent in the pursuit of autographed books by the writers and artists he admired, including Gorey, Sendak, Heaney, Byatt, Morrison, Updike and many more. Joseph Heller once wrote to Tubby in response to one more "please sign and return" request: "This is turning out to be a hell of a lot of work!" All signed books unconditionally guaranteed to be authentic. Many of the books are inscribed to both Cuthbert and his great friend of more than two decades Antonia Gale Moss.
