Many people in the Highlands of Papua New Guinea have an unsavoury reputation for tribal fighting, compensation, payback and then more war. One tribe, the KomKui, stands alone as a community who has sworn a covenant with God that they will never fight again. Their story began in 1942 when they suffered massacre at the hands of a brother clan and a policeman with his rifle. For years they wallowed in despair and despondency while they could think only of revenge. Then there came clan members who saw revenge as a dead end and called for peace with their brothers. Finally on December 18th 1980 they made peace with their brother clan, received baptism into the Catholic Church and made a covenant with God never to fight again. 0.0.

Sinaka Goava became a member of the public service in Port Moresby during that delicate period after WWII when the United Nations was insisting on decolonization. Ever since the beginning of the colony the native population had been regarded by the colonists, as pagan savages with deficient intelligence and delinquent tendencies. In taking up his work Sinaka was faced with paternalism, sneers and obstruction. He was articulate, gentlemanly and gained the attention of the Administration. He was called on to represent his country at the United Nations, he was a guide to Prince Phillip, he dined with the Queen on the Royal Yacht, rubbed shoulders with the great of all nations and served his country in almost every position available to Papuans. But his family and his own community at Hanuabada were always a major concern. His life crusade was the release of his father, Goava Oa, who had been jailed by Sir Hubert Murray. Sinaka knew his father to be a good and honorable man and the judgement of the Lieutenant governor a miscarriage of justice. Goava Oa served the Government Patorl post in Kairuku for 20 years but was dismissed for disobedience and insubordination when hi insisted on his right to long leave. A short time later when a sorcerer from the mountain s arrived in the home village carrying his poison stone and pot of magic, a fight broke out. The sorcerer was killed and Goava and his relations charged with willful murder. Such a fight would normally be treated a sorcery matter and self-defence and thus an internal matter. But because Goava was educated and had worked for the government patrol, Sir Hubert Murray believed the matter was different and c hose to treat it as willful murder and made a judgement for him to be hanged. He was reprieved by the Prime Minister of Australia but Murray ordered a life sentence with a note, "never to be released." Sinaka, his son, knighted for service to the community began a crusade for his father's release.
