OVERSIZE! No priority/international, except by special arrangement. Richly illustrated with colour plates. "Brad Kahlhamer fuses exuberant Expressionist painting with the visionary tradition of Native American art, resulting in what the critic Michael Cohen describes as 'a new narrative of how the West was won that allows the original inhabitants to live to tell the tale.' Kahlhamer draws in part from visual sources in the country western and Native American rock-music scenes, and his landscapes swirl with an atavistic energy; they seem to have a sound that accompanies their visual rhythm. Their unruly cast of characters, dead and alive, from the artist's life and from his imagination, are visited by the great American bald eagle, who sweeps though the frame as the artist's surrogate. Kahlhamer's immersion into his personal American landscape finds him mixing representations of the real into what he calls a visionary "third place," counted out from the 'first place' of his Native American heritage, and the "second place" of his more conventional American upbringing with his adoptive parents. This, his own personal third America, gleefully mingles the real and the imaginary. This volume is the first complete survey of Kahlhamer's work to date, covering more than 10 years of material." - Publisher. CONTENTS: Brad Kahlhamer's friendly frontier, by Jeffrey Deitch; Brad Kahlhamer: almost Arcadian, by Dean Sobel; Ecstacy Americana, by Mariuccia Casadio; Works; List of works; Appendix. Size: 4to. 1st edition. Fine copy in the original colour printed boards. Particularly and uncommonly well-preserved; tight, bright, clean and especially sharp-cornered. Literally as new. Physical description; 254 pages: illustrations (chiefly color); 30 cm. Notes; Published on the occasion of the exhibition held at Deitch Projects, New York, 3 May - 2 June 2007. Includes bibliographical references. Text in English and Italian. Summary; The Italian-born painter Francesco Clemente came to prominence in the mid-1970s when intensely subjective yet universal themes filtered into his skewed self-portraiture, witty wordplay and gestural figuration. This volume compiles a decade's worth of works on paper from those early days, many of which were inspired by Italy's political crisis at the time or fellow artists Alighiero Boetti and Luigi Ontani. The Italian artists of the 1970s were working in the context of the "terrorist generation." There was a crisis of capitalism and of Western societal values--both of which informed such major ideas in Clemente's early work as "fragmentation of self" and the "refutation of reason." Suddenly the body became a territory for artistic exploration; it became a border and led to the idea of travel. Here Clemente learned to trust geography over history, and his highly personal symbolism of the time bears proof of an itinerant life spent between homes in Madras (current-day Chennai, India), New York and Rome, with many trips to Dehli, Srinagar and various areas of Afghanistan mixed in.Published on the occasion of Clemente's recent exhibition at New York's Deitch Projects, this deluxe volume highlights the artist's concerns with process and concept--not technical perfection--and his obsession with paper's ephemeral vulnerability. Hints of Clemente's later forays into Surrealism and deep human psychology are also evident, and provide an essential view of the beginning of a masterful career. riginal brochure, 13,5*20 cm. Condition: Gut. 24 p., one ill. per artist. A very good and clean copy. - From the text by David Rimanelli: THE BEAUTIFUL DEAD. We were a select company at a summer dinner party given by an art dealer and her husband, a collector, at their country house on the North Fork of Long Island. After dinner, we all repaired to the capacious enclosed veranda for coffee. At one point, I overheard an interior decorator, and one not utterly without taste, talking about a house done up in what he called "Jacobean style." My interest was piqued, and 1 interposed that I did not think that this style, unlike Louis XVI or Federal, was one that could possibly be adapted to contemporary living. "Well then," the decorator continued, somewhat peeved by my remark, "how would you describe the Jacobean look?" Caught off guard, I mumbled something incoherent about Hatfield House, rebuilt in 1607-11 by Robert Cecil, first Earl of Salisbury and Lord Treasurer to James I, then nattered on further about court portraiture as practiced by Peeke, Larkin, and de Critz, before falling back on miscellaneous details of Cecil's political career Sprache: Deutsch Gewicht in Gramm: 550.

Condition: Gut. Unpaginated [20 p.], numerous ill. A very good and clean copy. - From the text by Sherilyn Shepperd: The Playful Past: Between Nursery Rhymes and Other Social Myths. The simplest memory game is the nursery rhyme. In the rhymes' structured form, the lines of prose offer an insight of the basic truths of human nature and humanity. The rhymes themselves are seemingly apparent but at its core they operate in a complex interspace of coded language. The child-like particularities of the formal aspects do not undermine the wisdom of its ageless teachings. As a past time for adolescence, amusement and play, the simplest verse provides a passage into the worlds of folk and myth. It is within this uncharted space where Japanese artist Koji Shimizu chose to locate his collaged sculptural installations. Exploring the locations of cultural identity and alienation, Shimizu presents a playful representation of these multiple histones. These mischievously entertaining drawings and sculptural objects present a faceted view of the worlds that it attempts to negotiate, closely operating like a nursery rhyme. Shimizu, unlike many members of his urban-bound generation, grew up outside the metropolis of Tokyo, Japan. Raised in a multi-generational household of farmers, Shimizu's grandparents played a pivotal role in forming the artist's perseption of events in the Second World War. Shimizu utilizes these detailed accounts and intertwines his own subjective history into the social and collective fabric. 1st ed. The Los Angeles-based artist Matt Greene is becoming known for his ethereal landscapes of fleshy fungi and bushy bombshells, paintings that explore his favorite shelves in the library: vintage pornography, fairy tales, horticulture, horror films, nineteenth-century Symbolist art, and, of course, the history of Modernism. Greene`s canvases unite those disparate and sometimes deliberately kitschy interests--and the weighty themes of gender, sexuality and epistemology that accompany them--in his distinctly serious and polished practice, creating a compelling tension between the two aesthetics. In this case, that tension is a bit higher than usual, as the artist shifts his attention from vintage to contemporary pornography. This new suite of paintings, the heart of his recent first solo show at Deitch Projects, is inspired by video erotica and uses its screen images to address highbrow concerns such as surface, color and space. (Sehr gut erhalten - neuwertig / in very good condition - as new) Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 1100 ill. OLeinen / Hardcover (cloth).
