Green cloth with bright gilt titling on spine. 96 pages clean and tight. Greenhouse gardening is probably even more absorbing than outdoor gardening. It affords endless possibilities for ` pottering ' and spending time pleasantly - and greenhouse owners always seem to be able to find an excuse for working in their greenhouses! Greenhouse gardening is fun, which is after all what a hobby should be, and for those who may just be about to try their hand at it, Mr Clapham has written an introductory book which outlines the main requirements for successful greenhouse plant cultivation. He advises the possession of a cool house, which has a little heating, as opposed to a cold house which has none, since the cost is very little extra - it need only be warmed sufficiently to keep out frost - and the range of plants which can be grown is increased enormously. Suitable types of greenhouses are discussed, followed by an account of the various methods of heating, and the necessary equipment and compost. Simple forms of propagation, such as seeds, soft-wood cuttings, leaf cuttings and layering are also given. General management of plants follows, together with the cultivation in detail of tomatoes and chrysanthemums, followed in turn by a selection of bedding plants and pot plants, whose cultivation is also discussed. Possible troubles, particularly errors in cultivation, are dealt with. The comprehensive selection of illustrations includes 12 colour plates showing how vivid and attractive greenhouse plants can be. Mr Clapham's book will be of the greatest possible help to the new greenhouse owner. Size: 8vo.
