Astangasangraha one of the important authoritative texts of Ayurveda. Among the ancient Ayurvedic classics it is said that Carakasamhita is the best for cikitsa susrutasamhita for sarira Madhavanidana for nidana and Vagbhata for sutrasthana. Sutrasthana is the section which deals with the fundamental principles and philosophical background of all Ayurvedic topics Carakasamhita and Susrutasamhita and other classics are composed long before. Astangasangraha or Astangahrdaya of Vagbhata. Ancient classics laid stress on any one of the eight branches of Ayurveda Whereas Vagbhata's Astangahrdaya and Astangasangraha deal elabroately with all the eight branches as well as the fundamentals. Astangasangraha is the comprehensive composition and the presentation and classification of topics are very systematic and the information is extensive. The sutrasthana of Astangasangraha deals with the fundamental principles required for all the branches of Ayurveda and its study is necessary for getting deep and profound knowledge of the fundamentals of Ayurveda related to all the eight branches. Due to this reason only it has been prescribed for the Ayurveda courses. English translation of this valuable treatise with necessary explanations and notes to make it readable and understandable for the students teachers as well as researchers of Ayurveda is very much necessary. This requirement is now fulfilled by Dr. B. Rama Rao. Important points from the authentic commentary Sasilekha by Indu are added apart from notes and explanations to get a clear understanding of the text. Comparative information on topics from other Samhitas is also given wherever necessary. Thus it is a valuable contribution for the students teachers and scholars of Ayurveda interested in the deep study of Ayurveda. 544 pp.

The Classical Uses of Medicinal Plants contains description of the uses of 395 medicinal plants arranged alphabetically and systematically according to different disorders as documented in Ayurvedic treatises right from the Brhattrayi to the Siddhabhesajamanimala spread over a span of about 3000 years. In every item exact references have been given so as to enable the readers to consult the original text if necessary though for convenience the original quotations have also been given in the latter portion of the book entitled Sastriya osadhiprayogasangraha. At the end two appendices are added one for disease wise indication of medicinal plants and the other on glossary of medical terms. The book would be useful on one hand to physicians for selecting effective drugs and on the other hand to research scientists who may plan scientific studies on these clues in order to discover potent remedies for problem diseases. This may also serve as complement to Dravyagunavijnana vol. II and a base for developing clinical pharmacology (Prayoga vijnana) in Ayurveda. Besides it throws light on identification of many new plants. 848 pp.

Bringing out the ancient Sanskrit texts of repute to the expert attention of the non Sanskrit knowing modernity is a specialised academic pursuit of many sided value. But this will be so only if executed with all the care needed. Bhela samhita an incomplete Mss is a reputed ancient Ayurvedic work of this nature earlier than the redacted Caraka Samhita. As such it automatically assumes an important historical value. The present attempt is a pioneering work and has utilized the merits of all the editions to correct the text as much as possible. To derive maximum productivity the translation should be incisive meticulous and reflect the merits and the vigour of the original. For this purpose a special system of what is referred to as an interpretive translation has been developed and meticulously followed through out. This would productively highlight the specialties and also bring into proper relief quite a few advanced thinkings in the field as available here. This is so despite the great age of the work. An usual criticism is that his text is too general and nonspecific. Enough care is taken to disprove this statement and show instead that it is quite specific and adequately detailed within its own framework. Infact it is better treated as a special work written more to the practitioners and has some emphasis on neurology. An other specialty of the attempt is that it heavily leans on the vyutpatti or the etymology of the Sanskrit technical terms utilised. For this is rather a more reliable key to the original thinkers in the field. This is particularly useful in suggesting the botanical equivalents of the Ayurvedic plants of this Samhita. 660 pp.
