He began his publishing career at Andre Deutsch, moving to MacGibbin & Kee, then to Penguin Books and finally, in 1960, to Jonathan Cape. Over the course og his career, he worked alongside Martin Amis, Bruce Chatwin, Roald Dahl, Joseph Heller, Doris Lessing, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Ian McEwan, Desmond Morris, Philip Roth and Kurt Vonnegut, amongst many others. One chapter of his autobiography 'Tom Maschler Publisher' [Picador, 2005] is devoted to Allen Ginsberg.
