Hardcover. Condition: Good. The popular image of pirates today-the combined effect of three centuries of books, plays, operas, films, cartoons, and children's games-is extraordinarily powerful.Pirates have become the mythical equivalent of giants, vampires, wizards, or witches, and they no longer seem quite real. Yet they definitely were real-as this first comprehensive, worldwide historical survey makes abundantly clear-and considerably more frightening historically than Long John Silver or Captain Hook. The barnacled sea dogs featured in this fascinating volume well deserved their reputations for bravery, hard drinking, avarica, foul language-and casual violence and cruelty.

Softcover. Condition: Good. In 2003 the World Bank, in partnership with the Government of the People's Republic of China, began a one year-long global learning process that focused on worldwide efforts to reduce poverty along different dimensions. A series of case studies, multi-country interactive videoconferences, online dialogues, and field visits led up to the working conference in Shanghai, on May 25 - 27, 2004. Development lessons and experiences were shared and debated at this event by policymakers, politicians, donors, academics, development practitioners, civil society groups, and representatives from development institutions. After such unprecedented knowledge exchange on worldwide poverty reduction efforts, many lessons were learnt about how to accelerate development and contribute to reducing poverty. Capturing the findings from the Shanghai Global Learning Initiative, Reducing Poverty on a Global Scale attempts to contribute to the broader existing knowledge on poverty reduction and the effectiveness of aid. The objective is to enlighten development practitioners about observed achievements towards reducing poverty and the factors behind them. Each of the chapters extracts implementation lessons learnt from a subset of case studies prepared along different poverty dimensions, focusing on such factors as the role of commitment and leadership, institutional innovation, learning and experimentation, and external catalysts. Instead of recommending particular solutions or best practices, the book distills key findings from the strategically selected examples and weaves them into a topical narrative. A companion CD-ROM contains all of the case study summaries presented at the May, 2004 Shanghai conference.

Softcover. Condition: Good. 1. "The World Bank comprehensively dismisses the arguments of the tobacco industry that tobacco control measures impair freedom of choice."- The Financial Times, May 18, 1999Smoking already kills 1 in 10 adults worldwide. Until recently, the epidemic and chronic disease caused by smoking mainly affected rich nations but it is now rapidly shifting to the developing world. Few people will dispute that smoking is damaging health on a global scale. However, many governments have taken little economic action to control smoking (higher taxes, comprehensive bans on advertising, or restrictions on smoking in public places) due to concerns that interventions would have harmful economic consequences.'Curbing the Epidemic' addresses important economic and social issues that confront policymakers when dealing with tobacco control policies and their impact on economies. The economic aspects of tobacco control are critical since the production and consumption of tobacco have a strong impact on the social and economic resources of both developed and developing countries. The report: Assesses the expected consequences of tobacco control for health Assesses the consequences for economies and individuals Demonstrates that the economic fears that have deterred policymakers from taking action are largely unfounded. It is believed with current smoking patterns, about 500 million people alive today will eventually be killed by tobacco use. By 2030, the report states that tobacco is expected to be the single biggest cause of death worldwide, accounting for about 10 million deaths per year.In light of the rising death toll from tobacco use, this report is also very timely. It draws on many productive collaborations that have arisen among governments, NGOs, and agencies within the United Nations system (UNICEF, the Food and Agricultural Organization and the International Monetary Fund).

Softcover. Condition: used. Catastrophe Risk Financing in Developing Countries provides a detailed analysis of the imperfections and inefficiencies that impede the emergence of competitive catastrophe risk markets in developing countries. The book demonstrates how donors and international financial institutions can assist governments in middle- and low-income countries in promoting effective and affordable catastrophe risk financing solutions. The authors set out guiding principles on how and when the governments, with assistance from donors and international financial institutions, should intervene in catastrophe insurance markets. They also identify key activities to be undertaken by donors and institutions that would allow middle- and low-income countries to develop competitive and cost-effective catastrophe risk financing strategies at both the macro (government) and micro (household) levels. These principles and activities are expected to inform good practice and ensure desirable results in catastrophe insurance projects. Catastrophe Risk Financing in Developing Countries offers valuable advice and guidelines to policy makers and insurance practitioners involved in the development of catastrophe insurance programs in developing countries.

Softcover. Condition: Good. 1. Earthquakes, floods, drought, and other natural hazards cause tens of thousands of deaths, hundreds of thousands of injuries, and billions of dollars in economic losses each year around the world. Many billions of dollars in humanitarian assistance, emergency loans, and development aid are expended annually. Yet efforts to reduce the risks of natural hazards remain largely uncoordinated across different hazard types and do not necessarily focus on areas at highest risk of disaster.'Natural Disaster Hotspots' presents a global view of major natural disaster risk hotspotsareas at relatively high risk of loss from one or more natural hazards. It summarizes the results of an interdisciplinary analysis of the location and characteristics of hotspots for six natural hazardsearthquakes, volcanoes, landslides, floods, drought, and cyclones. Data on these hazards are combined with state-of-the-art data on the subnational distribution of population and economic output and past disaster losses to identify areas at relatively high risk from one or more hazards.

Hardcover. Condition: New. This at-a-glance guide to political violence and global security provides a wealth of information on armed conflicts since 1946: death tolls, assaults on human rights, including political repression and child soldiers, and the causes of war and peace. Extraordinary changes are taking place in global security. Despite the escalating violence in Iraq, and the widening war in Dafur, since the beginning of 2002 there has been a decline in armed conflict worldwide. The number of war deaths, military coups, refugees, international crises, and genocides has also decreased. Many of these changes can be attributed to international activism, spearheaded by the UN which seeks to stop ongoing wars, helps to negotiate peace settlements, supports post-conflict reconstruction, and prevents old wars from flaring up again. Drawing upon data from the Human Security Report 2005, the miniAtlas of Human Security uses colorful world maps and other graphics to chart the incidence and severity of global violence. With easy-to-read text and captions, this fourth volume in the World Bank miniAtlas series provides a visually-compelling introduction to a dramatic but largely unknown trend: the decline in the number and deadliness of armed conflicts and wars over the past 1 5 years. Specially designed to show detailed information on a small scale, it is a succinct introduction to vital trends in global conflict and today s most pressing security challenges.

Softcover. Condition: used. Despite the diversity in income levels, languages, culture, resource endowments, and political systems, the countries of East Asia are more integrated now than they have ever been. Goods, money, and ideas are being traded across the region. East Asia is redefining itself from a collection of disparate nations that looked mainly to markets in the west, to a more self-reliant, innovative, and networked region. Countries in this region are strengthening ties with each other and seeking more strategic partnerships with the rest of the world.'East Asian Visions' is a collection of essays that convey, firsthand, how some of the most influential thinkers in East Asia view these challenges. The writers are eminent policy makers, statesmen, and scholars. They write about how competition with the west has bred success; how crises in the region have provoked introspection; and how the rise of China is catalyzing change. Some of the themes that permeate these essays include: How can East Asia's growth success be explained? Can all countries benefit from China's success, or will some be crowded out? Will regional integration aid efficiency or will it become a source of vulnerability? How can East Asian countries deal with the growing domestic concerns such as inequity, slum pollution, and corruption?
