'Only vicars' daughters become naturalists' was the response the author received from her father, a wagon weighman at a Yorkshire colliery, when she declared her life ambition. Later, Mari Friend did study botany, biology and horticulture and in 1980 returned to live in her native Yorkshire in a farmhouse on the edge of Shipley Glen outside Bradford. There, she and her husband, with the help of Countryside Commission grants started the Bracken Hall Countryside Centre. Very soon it welcomed over 35,000 visitors a year - one of its main attractions being a wildlife room in which adults and children could follow the fascinating or strange life cycles of water creatures in tanks, and of bees in an observation hide. Small Wonder is the result of Mari Friend's many years' experience of keeping small animals through the seasons and of sharing her enthusiasm with the visitors and the culmination of her life=long study of the natural world. The book is beautifully illustrated throughout. her text - fascinating, anecdotal and yet packed with information - will capture the adult imagination while her slightly larger-than-life illustrations compel the attention of children of all ages.

Hardback with Dust Jacket. Book in Good condition, Dust Jacket Poor. Duck egg blue cloth boards with black lettering to front and spine. Slight cracking to inside front boards.Pictorial Dust Jacket not price clipped but chipped and torn to edges. There is a frontispiece and nineteen other fine illustrations by Joan Rickarby throughout the text. To the bottom of one page a previous owner has neatly drawn the head of a fox. The author, Richard Clapham, the Editor of 'The Gamekeeper and Countryside' lived for over thirty years among the high fells of Lakeland, where hounds are of necessity followed on foot, the author is well qualified to tell this story of a fox. Based on his keen observation of every stage in the life of Reynard and his kind, and of those who share with him the hazards of survival in the wilds, it is as absorbing as any thriller - and infinitely more satisfying.
