First editions, first impressions, of the author's selection of her most influential contributions to philosophical thought. Anscombe was one of the leading analytical philosophers of the 20th century. The present volumes collect 48 of her essays on topics ranging from Aristotle to the ethical implications of nuclear warfare, and were originally published between 1947-79. Gertrude Elizabeth Margaret Anscombe (1919-2001) read Classics and Philosophy at Oxford, where she held several research positions until her move to Cambridge in 1970, where she was appointed to the Chair of Philosophy. She published close to a hundred papers on logic, the philosophy of the mind, and metaphysics. A staunch Catholic, she was known for applying her moral convictions to her philosophical output and was a prominent proponent of analytical Thomism. She received much publicity for her protests against the University of Oxford's decision to honour President Harry S. Truman; the third volume of the present work reprints her pamphlet "Mr Truman's Degree", explaining her philosophical objections based on the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Anscombe was also a close associate of Wittgenstein, who named her as one of his executors and entrusted her with the translation of his works, and her debates on naturalism with C. S. Lewis caused him to revise his book Miracles (1949; revised 1960). Anscombe was married to fellow philosopher Peter Geach (1916-2013), with whom she occasionally collaborated. "From Parmenides to Wittgenstein contains essays on Plato, Aristotle, Anselm, Aquinas, Hume, Brentano, Frank Ramsey, Wittgenstein, and two highly interesting papers on Parmenides. The second volume, Metaphysics and the Philosophy of Mind, begins with an introduction wherein Anscombe described how at the age of twelve she first became interested in philosophy. Her influential Cambridge inaugural lecture, 'Causality and determination' (1971), is reprinted in this volume; so too is her earliest philosophical publication, 'A reply to Mr [C. S.] Lewis' (1947). The topics of the third volume, Ethics, Religion and Politics included the morality or otherwise of contraception, the source of the authority of the state, the character of modern moral philosophy, the nature of faith, the meaning of transubstantiation, and the differences between just and unjust wars" (ODNB). Three volumes, octavo. Original grey boards, spines lettered in silver. With dust jackets. Publisher's price stickers on jacket front flaps of vols I-II, sometime removed from vol. III. Very slight bruising to vol. II head of spine: a fine set in fine jackets.
